“I spent three nights and three days in federal custody. During that time, I was never told what I was charged with, was not allowed to shower despite being covered in tear gas and pepper spray, had no phone call to my family, and no access to an attorney.” - George Retes, U.S. citizen and veteran.
I’m a US citizen and a veteran. ICE arrested me for no reason.
Jailed for three days without an explanation or ability to notify anyone, George Retes argues the only path to healing starts with the government taking accountability for its actions.

jokes aside, can you imagine how you would handle it if you asked a human assistant "did you make all this up instead of actually doing any of the work", and that person responded to you with "good catch"

A classic case of irresponsible both-sidesism from the NYT. The story is that Trump and MAGA propagandists are lying about Portland to incite a conflict, not that there are different views of the matter.

the interview where a local reporter said basically "this is a tactic so that less lethals hit the suit, right?" and the original frog guy responded "nah man, we're just being silly to show that this is absurd" really hit me in the soul

On one hand: don't anthropomorphize AI. On the other: LLMs exhibit signs of gambling addiction.

The more autonomy they were given, the more risks the LLMs took. They exhibit gambler's fallacy, loss-chasing, illusion of control...

A cautionary note for using LLMs for investing without guardrails.

👀 Multnomah County DA Nathan Vasquez declines to prosecute Nick Sorter after Portland Police arrested the right-wing influencer last Thursday. Two others have been charged.
Multnomah County District Attorney press relase reads:

"MCDA RELEASE ON NICK SORTER ARREST/PROSECUTION
10/6/25
Portland, OR- The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office declined to charge Nick Sortor with Disorderly Conduct for activities related to Thursday October 2nd.
The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office determined that the Portland Police had probable cause to arrest Mr.
Sortor at the demonstration at the ICE building that night based on the information that was available to them on scene. The arrest followed a small but chaotic scene involving Mr. Sortor and a group of demonstrators, two of whom were identified. All three were arrested.
After a careful review of the investigation, including reports and video, we do not believe the crime of Disorderly Conduct can be proven against Mr. Sortor beyond a reasonable doubt. The two other individuals arrested for Disorderly Conduct October 2nd have been charged.
We greatly appreciate the efforts of the Portland Police Bureau to manage the situation near the ICE building during this time of political unrest. The Multnomah County District Attorney's office remains committed to a fair and impartial administration of justice.
District Attorney Nathan Vasquez has repeatedly affirmed that "Free speech does not include the freedom to commit crimes. It does not matter if an individual is expressing ideology from the left, right, or center. What matters is whether or not there is evidence to prove a crime was committed."
While the vast majority of protests in Portland are free of criminal behavior, this office remains committed to prosecuting those individuals that engage in criminal behavior in and around political gatherings and protests. Each case will be reviewed on its individual merits.

The best part of how Portland is handling this is they’re not only protesting, but also angering the goose steppers by not taking them seriously.

Pretty genius. Because even ICE & the national guard don’t want to be displayed as that asshole fighting people in cute costumes.

It's @ingforart.bsky.social's theory of Antifascist Clowns.

Fash street thugs want to fight to show toughness, but clowns are a step too far. If they win against the clown, the best they can say is they beat up a clown. But if they lose? Even if it's a %1 chance... there's no coming back from that
