🐏 New Absolute Units 🐏

Same-sex relationships have always been part of rural England, but they've been underrepresented in our collections.

In the first of 2 episodes, @timjerrome.bsky.social shares his work tracing queer rural lives in The MERL archives.

Records reveal that the government of Bashar Al-Assad sold the 3 government-owned cargo ships to an opaque firm in the Seychelles in 2023 — two of them for just $1 each.
These vessels have been sanctioned by the European Union for transporting grain stolen from Russia-occupied territory in Ukraine.

It is worth noting that when the state has enacted violence on you, that then means you contend with the aftermath forever. One does not simply regrow a cornea or undamage the soft tissue of a brain.

The trauma, like all experiences do, fades. But it returns over and over wrapped in blazing pain.

Harry Potter didn't, in the end, encourage people to read, it just encouraged them to read Harry Potter.

I dont know how unhinged or uncommon this really is, but I don't think literary fiction is genuinely distinct from genre fiction, and i think the standards are often much lower not bc there isnt transcendant literary fiction but bc when genre fiction isn't amazing, we all know and laugh about it.

I don't know whether it's unhinged, but it's certainly divisive:

I believe all novels should have illustrations in them again. Like etchings in Dickens, or Japanese Light Novels.

Every single novel would benefit. Artists would thrive. We all win.

I just finished The Disenchantment by Celia Bell about some french lesbian aristos with poisonings and the nature of story telling and some Gender TM squeezed in there, and it I really liked it and was really surprised it had so few Goodreads reviews and that so many people didn't like it

I've been wanting to do this for a while, so here we go. This is a thread of some of the reports coming out about the issues with genAI, specifically negative impacts on people.

I'll do my best to keep this updated while it's relevant.
The source article even quotes an example of someone concerned enough about using a different name than the one recorded on entry on citizenship documents -- but we're supposed to believe no one else (perhaps someone who did not leave a handy record in English 🙄) ever had the same concerns?
This entire thread rests on the sleight-of-hand that:

'names changed to US standard on documents entered into official record on entry'

Is not equivalent to:

'names officially changed on entry'

WTF?
Now, more than ever, it's important to understand why so many the myths we tell ourselves about immigration are actually very harmful.

First of all, your great-great-grandparents names *were not changed* at Ellis Island. No one there had the authority to do that.

👩🏾 Black furry creatives? artists? musicians?
👨🏾‍🦱 Black furry writers, lyricists, poets?
🧕🏾 Black fursuit makers? craftmakers?
👵🏾 Black furries who wanna hype up other Black furries?

Let's make a thread of some Black work 👇🏾

(Non-Black furries: boost work you like, but enjoy our greatness in silence 🤫)
queer spaces are so overly racially biased it makes me upset every time.

the lack of boosting black positivity or just interacting with black art is upsetting. black art, people, and characters aren't viewed in the same desirability as white characters.
With a certain level of surprise they are still alive, really 😁
Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters

We talked before about how your character handles failure, let's do the opposite: how do they handle success?

Are they a good winner? Do they gloat? Feel like they still need to do more? Downplay their role?

Ireland has a population of 5m and we've a waiting list approaching 15 years. Why? Because their mandatory, archaic and traumatic psychiatric and psychological assessments are a deliberate bottleneck to ensure as few people as possible can access healthcare a nurse can do!
The ‘Transit’ gender clinic in Spain has a 3 WEEK waiting list! 😳😳😳

It covers a population of 8 million, (equivalent to the population of Scotland & Wales combined, or 1/7th of the population of England) It has a total of 43 staff, a majority of whom are part-time, working 6-7 hours per week!
Trans health waiting lists are a political choice
I’m just back from an awesome trans healthcare conference in Norway (blog on that to follow). Here I wanted to share information from a presentation by the founder of the transit trans health…

Do you see where this is headed?
Tweet from Jordan Weissmann: “Asked for an example of a group that had funded a violent protest, Trump named ActBlue and Indivisible, which I think pretty much tells you everything you need to know about the goals here.”
Below is a screenshot of an article excerpt detailing that neither George Soros nor Open Society Foundations fund protests, and noting that the White House named liberal groups like ActBlue and Indivisible in relation to violent incidents.
