In 1781, in the town of Sorel in the colony of the Province of Quebec, the Baroness Riedesel hosted a party.
At that party, she unveiled a fir tree decorated with fruits and candles.
This is the story of North America's first Christmas Tree.

On this day in 1917, the Quebec Bridge opened in Quebec City. Construction cost $23 million and took 14 years. The bridge collapsed twice during construction, leading to the death of 88 ironworkers. It remains the longest cantilever bridge span in the world.

On this day in 2023, Myles Goodwyn died.
Born in Woodstock, NB in 1948, he was the lead vocalist, guitarist and main songwriter of April Wine. He is a member of Canada's Walk of Fame, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

For nine years from 1962 to 1971, General Motors of Canada made a Canadian-exclusive car called The Acadian.
It was the first car built specifically for Canadians during the muscle car era by GM.

On this day in 1949, Heather Menzies was born in Toronto.
She is best-known for her role as Louisa von Trapp in The Sound of Music and as Jessica 6 in Logan's Run. She had a steady career from the 1960s to 1980s. She died of brain cancer in 2017.

On this day in 1997, the Ottawa Treaty was signed. It aimed to eliminate the use of anti-personnel landmines around the world. To date, 166 countries have signed or acceded to the treaty. The United States, China, Russia and India are among the nations who did not sign it.

For about 50 years, you could watch NHL games on Christmas.

He wrote several trilogies, won the Stephen Leacock Award and the Governor's General Literary Award and was the founding Master of Massey College.

The Boy In Blue starring Nicolas Cage told the story of one of Canada's great early athletes, Ned Hanlan.
Despite being a Canadian film, it made some changes to the story of the famous rower.

On this day in 2019, Fred Storey died.
Born in Empress, Alberta in 1932, he won three three World Championships and appeared at the Brier seven times representing Alberta from 1960 to 1969. He won three Briers (1966, 1968, 1969).

On this day in 1995, Montreal Canadiens coach Mario Tremblay left Patrick Roy in net for nine goals in an 11-1 loss against Detroit. Humiliated, Roy immediately demanded a trade. Four days later, he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche where he won two Stanley Cups.
