"What you think is the point is not the point at all but only the beginning of the sharpness." –Flann O'Brien, The Third Policeman (1967)

More context for the Flann O'Brien quote from The Third Policeman (1967) that I've been using as a metaphor for how we can perceive the heinous attacks on trans rights, and how cis folks and others might not understand how not only will their rights also be violated, *it's already happening*

It's not about the memorial building. It's about erasing the predominantly liberal message of the renowned cultural center. The center offers theater, dance, classical, jazz, pop, folk music & a National Symphony Orchestra. These were part of Kennedy's cultural legacy, something Trump cannot buy.

This is right. Trump wants to destroy the Kennedy Center precisely because it's a great center for the performing arts. And he's succeeding. People are boycotting. Halls are half full. The National Symphony, a very fine orchestra, is in financial trouble. Hundreds of other jobs are threatened, too

What does it take to move 1000 people? Smart infrastructure supporting choices that don’t take up so much space (or produce so much emissions/pollution, cost so much public money etc).

Mobility in cities is about space.

Immigrants, transgender people serving their country, and gender variant kids. Because none of them deserve to live in MAGA-land.

There was a vogue for climate debates along these same lines a decade or so back. And for evolution/creationism before that. With very few exceptions, these formats are stacked against the mainstream position. I recommend not doing them (and yes, I speak from experience).
Because it’s not just Bari Weiss’ CBS asking this question—in the last few months, I’ve been approached by half a dozen different shows looking to ‘debate’ the same topic.

I even got a request from NPR-distributed “Open to Debate” to see if I’d weigh in on “Has Feminism Hurt Women?”

The person charged with enforcing the laws is an open lawbreaker, assisted by a team of open lawbreakers, backed by a Congressional majority indifferent to lawbreaking, supported by a Supreme Court that privileges them to break the law.

It has no legitimacy whatsoever.
The person charged with enforcing the laws is himself a law breaker. In such a state, do laws even have any legitimacy?

It’s really remarkable.

Most don’t even know what’s happening because they outsourced their critical thinking to the Times, the New Yorker etc

But on a fundamental human level how can someone not at least find it interesting watching a whole planet shift geological ages in the blink of an eye?

Important thread from a former NYT staffer breaking down how the paper's genocidal anti-trans crusade is directed, top down, from the highest levels of the organization.

Stop putting bullets in the gun that's killing us. Boycott the New York Times.
The story never ran. Coverage of Cass was taken away from the international desk, per order of top editors in NY, and given to the science desk. That desk had been a leader in promoting anti-trans disinformation throughout 2022-23. (Hundreds of the nyt own contributors had denounced its bias)

The nyt soon gave Cass herself an unusual news platform to dismiss her critics and, further, to say that US doctors were “out of date” on gender care. The story’s “conversation with” format, rarely used in nyt news coverage, allowed Cass to repeat her assertions uncritically and without context.

How the nyt used the Cass report to restart its anti-trans propaganda campaign in the US:
Coverage of the report was initially assigned to a nyt UK correspondent, usual practice for a UK report. The story being prepared cited critics who called Cass a shoddy, political document that defied science
One reason the NYT has burned its credibility with trans people is that they still cite the discredited Cass report in reporting on trans healthcare. Never the German, Utah, or other systematic reviews supporting care. They also never provide the political context behind restrictions in care.

The ban in New Zealand was the result of a far right coalition party demanding it, not because of medical authorities implementing one. It's political but Azeen never mentions that context. The goal of this framing is to normalize bans to readers as if they're good faith rather than political.

The nyt’s anti-trans coverage has always been Sulzberger’s political project. He and his lieutenants saw trans ppl as easy prey, a way to show the right wing the nyt was not a “liberal rag” and pay no price for their bigotry

But there is a price: the lives of trans ppl, especially young ppl.

The running theme between the Epstein story, banning trans healthcare for minors, religious homeschooling and the complaints about adult children estranging themselves is a fundamental American belief that children are property with no rights of their own
America is a culture of child abuse. Ask any survivor - we find one another, we form networks and communities.

The true scale of it would stagger and sicken you, and so it is buried, it is swept under the rug, it is denied and the survivors are silenced by whatever means are necessary.
