He does a lot of playing on this broadcast. I like that the excerpts begin in the '60s & come up to the present.

Seems like jazz took a similar path — on a greatly compressed timescale.

Before the late 1800s, the European canon is extremely approachable! Little kids understand it effortlessly! It was meant to be enjoyed! Even the late Romantic stuff is mostly accessible and sounds good without a lot of insider knowledge! It only stops being fun in the 20th century.

It really sucks that snob gatekeepers framed classical as high brow music so now any time you talk about it, people assume you're trying to signal intellect

But the music itself isn't pretentious, thats cultural baggage. I just like it when sounds are arranged in a cool way, like any other genre

Today I learned that MIT is in Massachusetts because its founder, William Barton Rogers — a UVA prof and the state geologist — decided he just couldn’t with Virginia anymore.

One of Carole Cadwalladr’s 2017 pieces linked on the Orwell Prize page posted previously.

💯 You've gotta *want* to pronounce it correctly.

Come on dude. You've got better things to do than second guess me. The mash n the jars is cooling from having been in the blender. Therefore neither jar is sealed. Don't be a jerk.

Almost hot sauce. All they need is a little time in the back of the fridge & straining to remove the seeds.
The photo shows two one-quart canning jars that are filled with a bright red mixture of Serrano peppers, garlic, salt, & vinegar. After two or three weeks in the back of the fridge, I'll strain the mixture to remove the seeds & transfer the sauce to smaller bottles. The sauce will be medium hot, with bright flavors & a touch of natural sweetness.

It's very sad. Many seem to misremember that Obama was president during 9/11, Katrina, and caused the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan plus Great Recession.

George W. Bush? Reminds them of their grandpas! A nice elderly man who paints.

And so, of course, many believe that Biden was president in 2020.
nicholasgrossman.bsky.social
“Who was president in 2020?” remains one of the most pertinent questions in American politics—absurd, yes, but here we are—and that extends to “who was president January 1 - 19, 2021?”
joycewhitevance.bsky.social
That’s a nice trick, since Biden wasn’t the president on Jan 6.

As a once fully lapsed & now half-lapsed cradle Episcopalian, I can relate.
elisewang.bsky.social
I should point out that I’m lapsed, but as a friend of mine once put it about cradle Catholics, “you can never really leave the church. The farthest you can get is the foyer, and you can still hear the hymns from there.”

This is a very useful explainer, re: the incident with the priest & the ICE agents/thugs. (The post she quotes is good, too.) 👇🏽

For those not fluent in Catholic: refusing the Monstrance is not denying prisoners the Eucharist, it is refusing Christ himself, since Christ is present in the Monstrance.

If Portland’s blow up animals are the right language for Portland, this is the right language for Chicago.

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

I dunno. The timeline looks garden variety resistance liberal to me.

Meanwhile in Madagascar following protests by the self-identified Gen Z movement (like in Kenya, Indonesia, Nepal and Morocco... pay attention), sections of the military are now aligning with the protesters. (We'll see how that goes.)
