in 1776 a few small colonies w/no army or navy took on the greatest empire in history

in 1939 the US army was smaller than Romania’s

Over 50% of nonviolent movements to overthrow governments are successful within one year of their peak.

The key is to engage over 3.5% of the country, a cross-section of society—clergy, kids, grandmas, teachers) using DIVERSE & CREATIVE tactics, with women in leadership.

We can do this.

We don’t go quietly into the night. To fight the TDN bullshit of picking up our boxes and racks with papers in them we organized with other publishers and spoke out to national media. It was hard and time-consuming, but we beat Goliath. That fight is part of Free Press DNA:

I know. But it did have its problems before now, and that’s a big reason that this moment is here. Big media just wouldn’t report certain history, in no small part because they were complicit, even as all of it was embraced once again. Too many believed it just couldn’t happen here, or again.

We need more people start noticing this, including inside the industry, and step up to make sure that our existing journalism ecosystems are protected. If not, it’s some point we’re gonna be looking back on this time and saying why didn’t we do more to help local newsrooms shore up against chains.

oh I’m not saying the survival & growth of journalism or America is sure thing

we’re in the throes of either the birth of a real multi-group democracy

or the loss of US constitutional order & rebirth of jim crow

so we all gotta pull together & kick ass in the next 5 years

for our kids, & theirs

Yes, there’s truth in that. But even in sectors that where we see an improvement like local nonprofits, there’s a disturbing move toward chains to control and run local nonprofits from outside the state, while trying to hurt and miss characterize existing good newsrooms in competitive ways.

That is very dangerous trend, largely led and controlled by white men, mostly from old-school media models out to “beat” and dominate the industry, not enough people are talking about now. They pepper in words like inclusion, impact and equity, but don’t walk talk. The con needs to get more notice.

If not, they will beat down good “competitors” not run by people like them but any means necessary, and we’ll end up back in the same place as journalism power resets. I’m not being hyperbolic. This is a real threat to journalism in the US. Too many folks seem to fear these types for some reason.

a key thing about vought — and all of these guys — is that they have a totally top down and hierarchical vision of the world. they believe that the cultural changes they hate can be turned off by destroying the federal government because they can’t imagine that they emerged bottom-up in society

What he’s railing against is a profound shift in culture, status… He’s obsessed with the idea that America is controlled by a leftist “ruling elite” - but “elite” isn’t defined socio-economically or by political power, it means something like: Getting to define “real America” and who gets to belong.

Biden should have done this in 2024

he had many chances to set limits on bibi & never did

biden most effective prez of my life

but he had 2 flaws

the big 1, that cost him 2nd term:

fear the public would never accept his stutter

the smaller 1 that will hurt his legacy:

The administration wants a pat on the back but the ceasefire deal and hostage release should force us all to ask why Trump - and Biden - could not have done more earlier. It is the painfully obvious question for everyone in DC.

Because Netanyahu didn't bomb Qatar earlier, like some idiot.

That was quite foolish, and apparently provided a lot of leverage.

Obviously there were different ways - e.g.,not sending more weapons - that neither of them tried.
