Every day at noon, no matter how busy, Johny Merida Aguilar left his construction job and hurried to his 5-year-old son's school to feed him. His son has brain cancer and generally only accepts food from his father.

Merida Aguilar was arrested by ICE in September and faces deportation to Bolivia.

I’m heartbroken to learn that two New Yorkers have drowned as a result of today’s torrential rain and flooding. Their families and loved ones are in my thoughts tonight.

This kind of sudden and intense rain has become the new normal—and our infrastructure isn’t prepared for it.

One of the curses of being a sci-fi nerd right now is having read the same books as half the tech people who are talking up their ideas of the future, and being stuck going "hang on I know what book that's from". Today, some examples of that.

I refuse to become numb to the open constant bigotry of this administration. It is beyond grotesque and unacceptable for the US VP to wantonly repeat this absolute racist garbage. THIS QUOTE ALONE SHOULD STOP THE WHOLE NEWS CYCLE DEAD. @cnn.com @nbcnews.com @cbsnews.com DO YOUR JOBS.

1. This week, news emerged that former trans athlete, student at Middlebury, and advocate for trans rights, Lia Smith, was found dead.

Her death was ruled a suicide.

But I argue that it's not only a suicide. Every trans suicide is a murder by those in power.

a) conflate "successful under capitalism" with "a good environment for kids to grow up in," which are two VERY different things.

And b) are unwilling to acknowledge that people they love can do harm, because they're afraid that would mean their loved ones are "bad people," so instead they deny it

I really like how Zohran Mamdani has run a campaign that is so focused on making New York City a safe (including from the fascism of our current federal government) and affordable place for all its residents, and I am really appalled by how racist so much of the opposition to his candidacy has been.

many folks in my part of Seattle speak little to no English (tho God knows they speak more of my language than I do of theirs) and it is literally never a problem; they’re lovely people and good neighbors, and only an asshole would be uncomfortable living alongside them
Vance says it is "totally reasonable and acceptable" for people to not want to live next door to people who speak a different language than they do

the books are very, very explicit that hobbits' resilience in the face of evil is a product of their virtuous humility, while "hard men" are inevitably tempted to meet evil with evil.
The whole point of the story is that despite being a group of people who aren't especially adventurous and mostly love good food, drink, and leaf and quiet lives at home, that they have a hidden strength and are especially resilient at resisting the evil of the ring!
I’m really starting to suspect that most of the tech bros haven’t actually read Tolkien, as they certainly don’t understand it.

The gentle hobbits save the “hard men” of Gondor, largely through compassion and selflessness. Not the other way around. The Christian parable is barely hidden!
