Exactly - autistic people were there all along

I'm sure someone on here has more uptodate figures!

Last year, the FT reported a drop of 1/3rd in 'daily active users' in UK, which is not the same as 'people who left' but gives an indication. Also confirmed that 'socially conservative' users mostly stayed put (which may mean 'kept their account' or 'continued to use it actively' I guess).

Aren't there something like 20+m UK accounts on X though? It might not be as popular as we'd like
Again, the people who seem to be most damaged by social media aren't the kids - who are quite good at navigating it - but the middle-aged, who get caught up in extremism, fooled by misinformation, trapped by scammers, and addicted to porn.

Stop focussing on the kids. Start with the rest of us.

We're seeing an unprecedented increase in cancer incidence (prostate cancer diagnoses alone in England up by 25% since 2019), huge growth in complexity of treatment regimes, shortages of specialist staff, and massive variations in time to first treatment. www.bmj.com/content/392/...

Have we seen any evidence at all that there's a point where these people will have enough and will stop trying to further enrich themselves at the expense of others? They will always want more. We can choose between compliantly giving them everything slowly, or drawing a line in the sand now.

Interesting piece about a mystery new brain disease in Canada which heads in the direction you might expect. (Not quite Morgellons but with some similarities.) But I'm curious why the headline includes a quote from someone "The answer cannot be nothing" - which doesn't appear in the article.
The battle over Canada's mystery brain disease
A small Canadian province feared it had a mystery neurological illness on its hands. The search for answers set off a battle for the truth.

I BEG every smug commentator who praised Mahmood for doing the “tough but necessary thing” to read this.

All the disadvantages of plummeting immigration for the economy & public services, for NO POLITICAL GAIN.

Labour in DESPERATE need of a 180 change of course on immigration

A lot of researchers predicted this outcome to the HGP. I enjoyed the article - I didn't know this about Parkinson's - but this was an unfortunate misstep re autism I thought.

The fourth edition of our qualitative research text is on its way in 2026, with new additions to the editorial team, new chapters and updated content.

I remember way back asking SAGE for a cover that resembled a sassy chemistry book. They’ve delivered once again.

🔭 What’s the future of reflexivity & how do we put it into practice? New article in @natrevmethodsprimers.nature.com
I argue for three priorities 1) evaluation criteria 2) studying reflexivity as a socio-cognitive phenomenon 3) adapting it across research traditions

This paper is batshit insane. It also (of course) has A TON of bullshit references that do not exist. Hey @springernature.com retract this AI slop and fire the editor that let it pass. There is evidently no review or quality assurance process in place at this journal.

It's an automatic 4* in the REF scoring guide
Where the hell are Google and Apple enforcing their app store terms of service on X? Grok doing CSAM should instantly be a removal from the app store. Any other app doing this would be pulled instantly. Journalists should be asking for comment from these companies.

Looking for advice

Has anyone needed international police clearance for a role and faced barriers due to not being a resident or citizen?

A friend has an offer but can’t obtain a Canadian police check despite using all official routes.

Any insight on how this can be resolved would be appreciated.

Great stuff here from @soozaphone.bsky.social about the flimsiness of arguments being trotted out today against lowering the drink drive limit in England & Wales

I might be one of the cynics complaining about enforcement though...
OF COURSE drink driving laws need to be updated in England and Wales
We are using antiquated regulations, and are out of step with much of the rest of the world

Yes, I was literally just thinking about this. Ethics is about more than being technically correct, and this negative reaction is plausibly foreseeable I think. Some reflection by the researchers and ethics board seems in order
