I would like to agree with Pliny the Elder, but unfortunately i have read books by Brian Herbert.

I'm with Pliny the Elder on this one thing: there is no book so bad that some benefit can not be gained from reading it.

Transness is not bourgeois. This is a wedge idea dreamed up by some gleefully amoral think tank lobotomite to split trans people and make us fight each other. That we relay on modern medicine doesn't make us any more bourgeois than someone who needs antidepressants or cleft palate repair.

POLITICO: “.. They referred to Black people as monkeys and ‘the watermelon people’ and mused about putting their political opponents in gas chambers. They talked about raping their enemies .. and lauded Republicans who they believed support slavery.

It is tacky for really famous people to be in TV commercials for products. Their gambling debts/boat repairs are not my problem, those roles should belong to actors like the Time To Make The Donuts guy and the actress who said "who are you calling a cootie queen you lint licker" in that Orbit ad.

Because liberals tend not to directly insult conservatives on account of their humane and inclusive worldview so right wingers have to look back further for insults to GOP voters. Meanwhile this weekend every major Republican congressman said I hate America.
daveweigel.bsky.social
I'm generalizing, but why do conservatives remember political irritations for so much longer than liberals?

It's been 17 years since Obama said some voters "cling to their guns, to their religion" and I heard a senator denounce that last month.

Obvious theory: Media ecosystem puts it on repeat

katherine dee is herself a reactionary who has written for TERF blog fairer disputations. her bio there cites her work at american conservative, unherd, and the washington examiner. interesting how the bio she chose here doesn’t reflect that bias. the work itself features no actual citations

Didn't say it was bad not to finish 'em, lol. Also maybe some daylight between the books I identified and the ones you identified!

difficulty, boredom, and unpleasantness for the reader are not surefire signs of low literary quality, but our culture of consumer ratings has convinced people that they must be.

Jack Kirby talking about Darkseid and the anti-life equation: “If someone
took control of your mind and you were not able to think as yourself any longer you would no longer be yourself. You'd be something in his command. You as an individual would be dead. That's anti life.”

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

Lmao is this supposed to be a bad thing?
A tweet from Bari Weiss that says “"It's shaken me to my core," a lieutenant said of Mamdani's unexpected victory in June. "The absolute dread I feel is palpable.
"
Today in @TheFP our @Olivia_Reingold talks to the cops who say they will walk if Zohran Mamdani is elected in November:”

It's a sign of how many people (and journalists) live inside a media-created alternate reality that skill in the style of televised public performance associated with Hollywood actors is considered equivalent to 'authenticity'
brendannyhan.bsky.social
This is an obsession of mine - a huge pathology of the press is coverage suggesting that politicians who are less skilled performers are somehow less "authentic"

Me on Romney coverage in CJR: www.cjr.org/united_state...

Me on Hillary Clinton coverage in The Upshot:

God Bless America is just a song by Irving Berlin. It’s not the national anthem. America is so far down the moron hole it will never get out

To steal the metaphor, a whole movement of dudes frothing at the mouth while tearing the copper out of the walls, trying to find the off switch to “The Cathedral.”
jamellebouie.net
a key thing about vought — and all of these guys — is that they have a totally top down and hierarchical vision of the world. they believe that the cultural changes they hate can be turned off by destroying the federal government because they can’t imagine that they emerged bottom-up in society
thomaszimmer.bsky.social
What he’s railing against is a profound shift in culture, status… He’s obsessed with the idea that America is controlled by a leftist “ruling elite” - but “elite” isn’t defined socio-economically or by political power, it means something like: Getting to define “real America” and who gets to belong.

I had no idea about this story and it definitely fills in some gaps.
pookleblinky.bsky.social
Everyone knows that story about how Miyazaki's games attempt to simulate his experience of half-understanding English folktales, leaving large random gaps of unexplained things.

That's kind of what reading was like during the 80's and 90's.
