This is the best Scottish ghost story written in the 21st century so far. I devoured the novel in one sitting. It had that rare ability: it made me forget that I’m a critic. I simply lost myself in its pages as a reader.

My review of Hawthorn by Elaine Thomson

Hawthorn: A Scottish Ghost by Elaine Thomson is wonderfully and unapologetically Scottish, filled with delicious Gaelic words like ‘turadh’…

It's fucking infuriating the "mistakes" the posh make are just brushed aside and off they trot to a plum gig as an overpaid advisor or whatever. No consequences. By contrast those on minimum wage are responsible for human lives in social care. It's harder work than the elite will ever do too

The Daily Mail and The Daily Telegraph seem very quiet on the allegations of antisemitism against Nigel Farage. I wonder why that is?

Has anyone else had a flu/Covidy thing/hideous cold for weeks, then it seemed to get better, only to come roaring back even worse than before? Or am I a lone victim of the plague?

For the first time, the MAGA base has turned on Trump - over Epstein. And significantly the rebels were led by a once ultra loyal woman. It shows there’s a limit to the cult’s acceptance, and Trump’s power. It also reveals his weak spot: Epstein and female rage

I mean, look, I'm not a reporter, so who am I to talk?

But on a day where the president both just called a woman reporter "Piggy" and is celebrating someone who had people bone saw apart one of my colleagues, I might just be a little ready to defend my colleagues and profession.

But that's just me
