The memo “gives Pete Hegseth, the defense secretary, wide authority to repurpose funds, even though no such permission has been granted by Congress.”

THIS IS NOT OKAY.

What I mean by "care infrastructure" is childcare, of course, but also paid leave. It's investment in schools, health care, housing, communities. It's vaccines, food safety, gun restrictions. Then maybe moms wouldn't feel as if their children's health & futures are entirely on their shoulders. 2/2

When society fails to support caregiving thru its actions despite professing to value motherhood & children, it's no wonder that moms seek ways to find community.

There's nothing wrong w/ that, but w/o robust care infrastructure, moms will continue to feel like they're on their own. 1/2

This is going to be my soapbox for a while, but we're seeing this jurisprudence change in real time. When Rucho was decided, the Court at least acknowledged that partisan gerrymandering was unfortunate. Today, it's treated as a legit goal for states to pursue and one that VRA districts must respect

Aside from losing many Democratic seats, Black representation in Congress will probably drop from around 14% of seats (nationally representative) to maybe 7 or 8% (not representative)?

New, from me: I break down all that is happening with the shutdown.
Shutdowns are bad. But only Trump and Russ Vought are brave enough to ask: what if shutdowns aren’t painful enough? How can we use this as an opportunity to target our political enemies? 🧵

This is quite a 7,000-word essay on how American higher education has fared over the last nine months. It's worth your time to read.

123. In 1960, 87% of women got married by the time they were 25 years old. In 2025 it was 24%. (Comment: The 1950s was the closest we got to a compulsory marriage system for women in this country, and the American right has pining for it ever since.) (reposting with sex labels)

I know it is beside the point because this administration simply wants resegregation but conferences for Black professional associations have always been open to everyone. Typically, the started as a response to white exclusion, and did not replicate that.

Very bad: OSU unilaterally cancelled the registration of grad students attending the joint conference of the National Society of Black Physicists and the National Society of Hispanic Physicists. And OSU won't fund recruiting at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science.

Between this, the resegregation of the military, and the retooling of the Department of Justice to focus on (fake) discrimination against white Christians, and eviscerating Civil Rights Act enforcement, they have nearly erased the structural legacy of the Civil Rights Movement.

This is a powerful account from a PhD student whose fellowship was terminated by NIH because it was part of a "diversity" program without any other considerations or understanding of what the program or the students were actually doing.
