In my last story on staff at the Times, my colleagues and I analyzed over a decade of federal science funding and interviewed many federal employees to identify all of the science that went unfunded this year. Here's a paywall-free link:

While the administration has said it is cutting “woke programs” that “poison the minds of Americans", it actually funded fewer grants in every area of science and medicine.

“They brought everything to a stop,” said Sarah Kobrin, a branch chief at the N.I.H.’s National Cancer Institute

New paper is out! A super fun collab with @akw-lab.bsky.social We started with a pilot grant from UW Nathan Shock Center, ended up describing how different S-adenosylmethionine synthases (sams) have distinct functional roles
Distinct S-adenosylmethionine synthases link phosphatidylcholine to mitochondrial function and stress survival - PubMed
S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), produced by SAM synthases, is critical for various cellular regulatory pathways and the synthesis of diverse metabolites. Humans and many other organisms express multiple SAM synthases. However, loss of different synthase activity can have distinct phenotypic effects. For …

If we have to live under a lawless authoritarian regime can we at least get GRR Martin locked up in isolation until he finishes The Winds of Winter?

always a tricky balance. Once I got "productivity may be lagging in publications, but current preprints suggest the work will be published in a journal soon", and then for another "Aim 1 seems like it is already complete and going to be published soon, but the preliminary data is informative"

This. There is no longer any excuse for vaporware.
…but this dovetails in an interesting way with the idea a grant has to be half completed in order to get funded.
Preprint your manuscripts folks. Way more impactful to cite a preprint (that the reviewer can look at if they so choose) than to say "manuscript submitted."

Back in the day, physicist Sheldon Glashow was being courted by Texas A&M and was offered the same salary as the highest paid faculty member in academia at the time, that of the Texas A&M football coach Jackie Sherrill.

A while ago, I noted that a use case for LLMs was people who are bad at writing and who would like to upgrade to mediocrity

No, you didn’t. You are a top team in the NHL and you don’t even need a mid, injury prone goalie. The guy did bad things and avoiding legal consequences doesn’t mean he didn’t.

Interesting to see tuff guys Trump and Pete Kegseth scurry like roaches once they realize international murder charges may be the opportunity for backstabbing that their maga friends were waiting for.

this is at least the second time he’s claimed he doesn’t know anything about a pardon he has ostensibly signed, and i feel like that’s two times too many without a follow up question from the press corpse
talking to reporters last night, Trump claimed of Hegseth's double tap strike that "I don't know anything about it," then moments later claimed "I don't who you're talking about" when asked his plan to pardon the former Honduran president

Breaking News: A federal court said that Alina Habba, a Trump-appointed lawyer, had been serving unlawfully as the U.S. attorney in New Jersey. She was neither confirmed by the Senate nor appointed by district trial court judges — the two traditional pathways.
Appeals Court Says Alina Habba, Former Trump Lawyer, Is Serving Unlawfully as U.S. Attorney
The judges wrote that the Trump Administration appeared to have become frustrated by legal and political barriers that have prevented its preferred U.S. attorneys from leading federal prosecutors’ offices.

This is not a "students today" post--it's more "this is a new form of dysfunction" that doesn't look exactly like it's been in previous decades. It's more than just "first-year chaos." It's an across-the-board inability to process instructions, engage with longer texts, and *connect* with others.

🤔
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

The Trump administration is clearly anxious about tomorrow’s special election in Tennessee’s 7th District. Their rally was essentially a gathering of the MAGA elite in Tennessee. Donors, state representatives, five members of Congress, the governor, and then-Speaker Mike Johnson all flew in.
