A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word.

I love history. Especially niche histories of our communities and trailblazers in them. If we don’t memorialize their/our stories and get them on record it is so easy for incredible fascinating people to get lost to the mists of time and memory. Work like this is so important.
Getting to know this legend has been one of the greatest joys of my life and I'm so pleased to introduce you to her with this gorgeous feature from the Inquirer, where she speaks for the first time in over 30 years on her incredible journey

Harlow's still here
Fifty years ago, Harlow was the queen of Philadelphia nightlife, Jack Kelly’s girlfriend, and the city's most famous transgender woman. Today, she’s ready to tell her story.

One of my favorite parts of working on Rachel Harlow's story was meeting and interviewing all of the elderly queer people she knows, some as old as 90. Their perspectives are fascinating and they can be hilariously blunt. Every old gay man volunteered that Grace Kelly's sister was prettier than her

@tomandlorenzo.bsky.social first told me about Harlow five years ago, in sort of a "wouldn't it be cool to track her down" way, but she remained elusive.

When I reconnected with them this year to see if we could revisit the idea, they were already deep into working with Rachel on her memoirs.

ok I know this is tangential to the original post but that story in the Christian Bible actively misrepresents Jewish religious law and beliefs which explicitly permit breaking religious commandments for the purpose of saving a life. פיקוח נפש is a critical halachic principle
The end of that story in the Bible is Jesus telling the Pharisees to go learn what it means for the Lord to say “I desire mercy and not sacrifice.”
Quite the shift from "I think if you do something bad you should die" immediately to "as they say in the Bible..."

They know that SCOTUS is very likely to overturn the 14th amendment, which definitionally means that overturning the 14th amendment is a reasonable thing to do, which means they need to start preemptively constructing justifications for it now, to show how reasonable and sensible they are.
You could write this. Or you could write: “That notion, which has been the rule in nearly every country in the Western Hemisphere for over a century, is grounded in the language of the 14th Amendment.”

All how you choose to frame it.
