tara "tara wrist" hillegeist. i dabble. (once, i moonlighted as a dragon golem vtuber for a time. one day i shall do so again.) if you're here you're here for 1 of 3 things: media criticism, dialectical materialism, or unhinged reposts of what i like.

ae/2501/maeth. do you know what the difference is between someone society treats as real and someone they treat as fictional? it's whether they experience consequences for how they use them. they can do anything they want to you if they know you don't really exist. so: do you know if you're real?
saying it like this, as if i can't or won't get Loud about evangelion at even the slightest provocation,

The double splitscreen shot from 1:13-1:42 is one of the most insane shots created during the photochemical era.

You’ve got a real woman fondling Maroon and Valiant at both ends of the shot, with the woman’s body hidden by splitscreens that run along the edges of the fluted columns in the BG…

there’s a thing here about for the last decade or so, online people have been very negative about small talk - the weather, or local news, or whatever - and small talk is the grease that keeps physical interactions going, and i am tired of ceding that to shut-ins
i say thank you to the bus driver when i get on and yell thank you when i get off every day i ride the bus, and i take two buses to and from work, being nice and friendly costs you nothing and should be your default expectation for yourself because it improves your day and everyone else’s day
Being nice to people is just fun. Asked young server at taco place how her day was going (fine but tired) and she asked me back. I said I managed to finish my to-do list and she unexpectedly gave me a high five! Treating people like people is always rewarding.
by god, could will eisner draw some *faces*

unfortunately for all empires, the torah measures time according to its own rhythm.

... well, that's one way of looking at it, anyway. certainly seemed resonant, today.
not for nothing do the prophets - the original wokescolds of the world - continually hold their people accountable for letting their desires to make of themselves a great nation turn them into another sodom. and no wonder an empire of men would like us to misinterpret their words, centuries on.
i do not think i need to elaborate on the implications this portion of the torah has for how we are meant to treat one another - to treat One and Other, at that. the point is clear. to embrace the cruelty and hostility of sodom towards the foreign despite knowing well better is an unforgivable act.
the aspects of the divine that came to pass judgment on sodom were, as far as they knew, mere strangers passing through from an Other place, thinking they could move through sodom like they had any right to be there. as if *equal* in dignity. *that* is what the sodomites wanted to rape out of them.
when lot weakly objects, their threat is telling - "shut up, or we'll remember you don't belong here either, and besides, who gave you a right to tell us what to do, you're not one of us anyway". all they care about is making sodom great again - a sodom that will always be a home for sodomites.
they mobilize as not merely a mob but an organized militia, led by wealthy landowners, agitating to humiliate those who've sought to find a place to dwell within *their* city without *their* consent, to drag them from within homes and violate their personhood by any means necessary.
contrary to a common xtian faux-exegesis, the sodomites' actions are nothing more or less than the actions of a culture that polices the boundaries of who is "man" enough to be "human" via the threat of violent rape, and who see foreigners as inherently in need of being put in their subhuman place.
included in this week's portion of torah - bookended by explicitly contrasting examples of what constitutes actually considerate and respectful behavior towards guests and strangers - to study was the account of lot and the aspects of the divine in sodom.

I will never not remind people that the NY Times described cheese and tomatoes on a hamburger as a weird Californiaism and I filter all that paper’s takes through that lens.

heads up to anyone who holds trans kids near: amy harmon from the nyt is searching for and having a hard time finding people to interview to find out exactly what trans kids are doing when their care is limited or cut off, and for purposes of community safety, please shut the fuck up around her.

This being said, I'm at the stage where I'm just cold emailing old coworkers and random local ad agencies that aren't even hiring, so if you are in need of any of the many things I have learned how to do over the years, holler at ya boi.
AAA studios don't even email me back, no matter hard I hurl myself at the brick wall lol.

I've barely been staying afloat at all out here but it's ONLY because I've been able to work with a handful of wonderful like-minded people on some smaller teams.
I also mentioned that the only reason I have had anything resembling stable work in the past few years is that I never cracked into AAA and I've managed to only work with people who care first and foremost about sustainability. And who actually enjoy the craft of making games. THIS SHIT MATTERS!

Grateful to spend two days on the Klamath watching chinook, liberated by dam removal, return to streams from which they’d been precluded since the Titanic sank. Fish are everywhere, in numbers that stagger the mind & locations that biologists figured would take years to repopulate. Too beautiful.
