ICE Watch does not spur violence; it reduces it, says sociologist @nbedera.bsky.social

Keep patrolling. Keep whistling.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

Hey federal Democrats. How does a QR code and a body cam stop this?
This is what happened in our neighborhood yesterday. ICE snatched a human being off of our streets, roughed them up badly, and then pepper sprayed legal observers as they documented it all. This is a daily occurrence happening all throughout Minnesota right now.

A bunch of yall cheering this on?

I’m confused.

This does not make me feel safe. This terrifies me. i do not want this anywhere near my child’s school.

This is not the future I want to build. Fuck this. Fuck your guns.
With masked armed federal agents sitting at the corner and circling the St. Paul neighborhood for quite some time, about 50-100 neighbors came out to blow whistles. This man says this is his neighborhood and thanks everyone who came out.

The agents have all left.

Look I understand the urge to use the devices. I truly do. We destroyed our Amazon tech a couple years ago because they were being allowed to listen and record while passive.

I highly recommend removing the devices from your life now. They aren’t worth the support of fascism. Please .

The degree to which Allina is doing ICE's work for them is really upsetting.
The allegations in this story are incredibly disturbing. Blocking kids from bedside, lying to their pastor, pushing a patient — Why are hospital staff so involved in ICE’s attempts to detain a woman in their care?

I would love to see this. I’m a huge ⚽️ fan, and I usually even subscribe to live television for the durations of the World Cups, but the way Infantino has sucked up to Trump, politicized this tournament, and made it affordable only to wealthy non-fans, I’m planning to ignore it.
Honestly boycotting the World Cup would be the most effective and probably the least disruptive of all of the options available to Europe. I’m not sure how you can send teams and fans to contribute to a spectacle designed entirely to celebrate a guy trying to invade your territory.

If the @dfl.org had its head screwed on they wouldn’t be alienating their base by asking for donations at a funeral, they’d organize a massive grassroots pressure campaign in CDs 1, 6, 7 & 8. Flooding all their offices, everyday with shame. I would contribute $ to that! Carlbom is clueless.

Another source of inspiration that there is nothing wrong with America that can't be cured by what is right with America.
People here are outside patrolling their neighborhoods in this, trying to keep their neighbors safe from lawless armed masked goons. Armed with whistles and vests, they are essentially fighting a war against their own government and its ethnic cleansing campaign.

What people know about publicly is only a fraction of the work actually going on, much of which is being done very quietly for the safety/security of our vulnerable neighbors.

Truly inspired by so many people (you know who you are) right now. And truly surreal that any of this is even necessary.
Minneapolis and Saint Paul have basically mobilized into a war economy of mutual aid and non-violent defense. I’ve never seen anything like it, even during Covid. People who barely vote are guarding their schools from ICE and doing the shopping for neighbors in hiding.
This is so smart. I’m so impressed with all the different ways you’re helping your neighbors.

That people would only work to protect their neighbors because they get paid cuts to the core of conservative ideology. Across Minnesota, people, many who weren’t that political, are outside in negative temps, armed with whistles and phones putting their lives on the line to protect their neighbors.

We had endless articles and TV clips about Biden's mental capacity but silence about Trump's obvious unfitness when he says he's going to start a war with Denmark over Greenland because he didn't get the Nobel Peace Prize.
Not the sort of letter committed to paper by a well man. "Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace"

Prior to Trump, I always thought someone could do a cutting satire of US politics with a show about a president who loses his mind while in office, and the lengths to which his party will go to justify and defend his increasingly insane pronouncements.

We’re living in that show.
Christ. We all suspected this. But the narcissistic cockalorum actually put his “if you don’t give me the Peace Prize I’ll start waging wars” threat in writing.

The petulant pillock is literally ready to kill people because he didn’t get his Special Prize.

I’m not sure people outside the Twin Cites realize the prevalence and the fear ICE is causing in Twin Cities. They are dining undercover pretending to be couples at restaurants, they are going to businesses and checking the license plates of cars to find employees. Every public place is compromised.
