So, like, this isn’t even my rant.

This is just, like, what is true. The annual salary of approximately 1,500 faculty members is caught up in buyout/guarantee money for two football coaches. This is happening in the midst of hiring freezes and dramatic budget cuts in academic units. It’s just true.
LSU is paying its previous football coach over $50 million NOT to coach there while likely guaranteeing Kiffin something approaching double that, all while having an academic hiring freeze and budget cuts across the board. What is the purpose of a university (rhetorical)?
SOURCES: Lane Kiffin is expected to accept LSU's offer to become the Tigers next head coach. Kiffin is set to meet with his Ole Miss team this morning at 9 AM CT. As we reported yesterday morning, LSU has been very confident it was going to land Kiffin. www.nytimes.com/athletic/684...

Update

The Dog Medicine guy is 759 days in has apparently built up so much static electricity in his hands due to the constant friction rubbing them together and on other surfaces that he now just has A Static Field around them some days

I increasingly think Warframe, like stardew valley, involves a bunch of people who wanted to make some cool music and just happened to build a video game to do that

I think a uniquely frustrating part of reading news in the current era is the uncertainty. Something new will happen but no one knows for certain what the responses will be because law and power are vibes. Is today's thing just bluster or are thousands going to die? Shrug emoji

When I was in grad school, I found there's only six hours of useful thinking I could do a day. After ten hours you're just piling on mistakes, there's lots of research on this
Saying you "coded for 36 hours straight" is something only people who have never programmed, and have no idea what programming is, would think is an impressive thing.

It is a claim that literally would not even fool a first year CS student. They'd laugh at you for saying it.

You can't make planes trains and automobiles today because there isn't an actor alike who can do the bit where he takes a drag on a cigarette then eats a whole hotdog then blows the smoke.
You really could just put a tight camera on John Candy with nothing but him and the driver's seat of a car in frame and then watch him almost wordlessly do five of the funniest minutes in the history of movies.

A great account of the brilliant Kiel team's work at the LBK site of Vrable here. Andrew does such a good job of teasing out the complexity of that century of the LBK.
In 2022, archaeologists at @uni-kiel.de's @neolithicbodies.bsky.social found 34 decapitated skeletons piled in a space the size of a parking spot. In the 3 years since, they’ve found 50 more. The mass grave is evidence for the collapse of the 1st pan-European culture 7,000 years ago. @science.org 🏺💀
