The killing of Alex Pretti and the grotesque lying was an overreach by the administration. They've paid a price and had to pull back a bit. But it's when there's some disarray that the democratic opposition needs to intensify the offensive, and turn a marginal tactical success into a major victory.

We really need to get to work figuring out what the next era of 'good tech' is going to look like ala this.

Like... as much as I'd love to just revert...

I feel like we gotta chart our own path on this one.

I'm gonna add to this that the Dems had ZERO to do with the Bovino firing. It was the tireless work of the good people of MSP standing strong, filming and writing the news with their first hand accounts. The press tried to both sides it. They WANTED to. But the citizens of Minnesota ended this guy
The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced the Democrats have to push their hand immediately. The parallels with the delays and subsequent failures after January 6th are blaring warning signs about what will happen if they don’t go after the issues with ICE and CBP at the root RIGHT NOW.

Bovino out is a great indicator. It’s a great start. But none of us can be appeased right now. It’s still abolish ICE. It’s still prosecute these fascists. It’s still destroy the whole apparatus that has been terrorizing and disappearing and murdering our neighbors.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

They aren’t backing down. They’re just threatening people in other cities. Still illegal. Still unconstitutional. Even if they haven’t yet backed it up by shooting someone in the face.

None of these Republicans and most of these Democrats are not all of a sudden “seeing the light on ICE.” They simply understand the worm turning on public opinion and saving face. They will ALL go back to voting for minority brutalization as soon as they can. You can’t keep falling for this.

In 21st century US politics, the two most important ongoing stories are:
1) The radicalization of the GOP, &
2) the degradation of the information environment, ie, the death of accountability journalism.

Neither gets a fraction of the attention devoted to, say, annoying woke undergrads.

We are dealing with Trump 2 because of this. Dems are always all "awww we know you made a mistake it's OK we forgive you just don't do it again" to white supremacists and every one of you looks like a goddamn idiot. They're done. No hope. Fuck em
I will never understand the rush to forgive white supremacist fanboys for the harm they enabled as soon as they decide it isn't fun to be hateful anymore. Sure there are some who have actively worked to make amends, but tons more will pay lip service and then start the cycle all over again

This is why we had Jim Crow instead of truth and reconciliation after slavery ended. People are so quick to absolve anyone who pays lip service to changing their mind about human rights violations instead of letting them live with the social consequences of their words
Bluesky idea: if people who didn't agree with you change their opinions so that they do agree with you, why not be happy that you are making progress - rather than complaining that they are "only just catching up"?
