If you have only therapy speaking frictionless besties then like, whats the conflict. And if everyone is trying to be actually satan, then it's the same problem. Narrative thrives off of difference. A story that leans very heavily cruel might have a couple of very sweet characters, and vice versa.

This goes the other way around too. Grimdark stories are so utterly invested in the cruelty without catharsis that it also becomes frictionless. Everything just... slides off of me because there's no break, there's no balance. A lot of character writing boils down to a kind of socratic dialogue

I think a lot of writers trying to write cozier narratives confuse it with frictionlessness. As a reader I come primarily from contemporary romance and the stakes are pretty unserious, but because the characters think they are, they'll fuck up. They'll make mistakes, they'll hurt each other etc
'Me and my group of friends who never do or think or say anything wrong, and we also never fight or have disagreements stronger than what pizza topping to get, go on little adventures' kind of thing.

My honest rec as an author is to never ever use kdp for physical books that: have color, are more than 24 pages, or are meant to be handled more than a few times. The glue is bad, there is no QC, Amazon is scummy as hell, and you often pay more trying to produce results that can rarely be reproduced
