Especially since our chest splits in two right down the center! Right where the things we hang from the neck hang, making a perfect little visually pleasing and secure spot for it!

necks are just so perfect for hanging things around. really good that we have them. good character design

Looking for further context on this frustrating recurring story? Earlier this year, I spoke with librarians from across the country about manga become a new target for book banners.

It’s only gotten worse since then

Apologies if anyone felt I was being short (emotional) I was trying to be short (material) bc I was attempting to reply to too many people too fast and I'm kinda mentally drained rn!

Its chill, I'm just calling this session closed, I was exhausted from all the conventions this week anyway and not rly prepared to engage on that scale meaningfully!
ghaspey.bsky.social
I love you all still! Thank you for the impromptu philosophers' senate, I just have spent all the time on the topic I want to now!

I did not expect this to break confinement & get told I have brain damage for saying its ok for Aku not to have some UwU relatable reason to be a shapeshifting master of darkness unleashing evil OR be misunderstood as saying that villains should never be sympathetic

SO I have muted it now thanks 💖
ghaspey.bsky.social
I'll say it: I think its rly annoying and frankly amateurish that writers are constantly told their villains must be understandable or have sympathetic motivation to be interesting or realistic when all our big villains irl are in fact rich, stupid, selfish, trickster dillweeds and always have been
ghaspey.bsky.social
Its really not really recontextualization though to me? We didn't know about Demise, but we knew he was ganon, and we knew Ganon was an evil tyrant hellhog, and we knew that for ten years at least prior (royal we because I was not alive for most of those years, but I'm sure you werent either)
ghaspey.bsky.social
I'm not saying you can't do any of that! The stance I'm taking in fact is that people shouldn't tell OTHER people they can't do something, and that that limits what can be created by placing an objective "good" or "bad" on these qualities in a villain. Aku is just an evil shapeshifter and thats fine

I don't know much about UK gang politics but in the US generally gangs arise and take power by exploiting and recruiting a class or demographic of people that is highly underserved and actively stifled by the govt or economy, and treated the underlying problems tends to greatly alleviate gang ranks

Dude is Ganon, the remnant of demise and tyrant of the triforce of power persisting by spite generation after generation. Ganon just took a human skinsuit this time: he never would have been satisfied by merely controlling the hyrule valley- its a thing he didn't like, but it isn't why he is evil

Windwaker Ganondorf was and has always been my least favorite of them, and its partially because people hear him say this stuff and just take it as sympathetic motivation like he hadn't already fully abandoned the Gerudo and embraced monster summoning and abhorrent evil by the time the floods came
ghaspey.bsky.social
Why are heros not allowed to just destroy evil and restore balance? Aang didn't have to see himself in Fire Lord Ozai
ghaspey.bsky.social
Big disagree, we don't need to know WHY Aku is a shape shifting master of darkness who has the power to unleash an unspeakable evil, we just know he IS and he DID.
ghaspey.bsky.social
Yes!! It was an interesting dynamic that people kept falling for it and Frieren is just like "ugh, you idiots, you fall for it every time just because they're pretty."
Humans want so hard to empathize and that's good but when someone isn't going to you also have to learn that lesson!
ghaspey.bsky.social
I love it though lol. I mean, I saw it coming a mile away, but it was just so funny
ghaspey.bsky.social
My point isn't that your preference is incorrect- its that this thing you DON'T prefer also isn't incorrect. Aku isn't WRONG as a villain just because he isn't sympathetic- in fact, I'd argue it would not serve the story of Samurai Jack for him to be, because itd distract us from Jack's Odyssey.
ghaspey.bsky.social
Sorry, I'm not trying to dismissive I promise! But like... I like Aku more. I just want to make sure we aren't stating preferences as objective facts, you know?
ghaspey.bsky.social
Honestly, I vote let yourself write that kind of villain, and a hero who tries to empathize and get them to see reason, and simply... can't. And must reckon with the fact that some people are being turning good, but that it shouldn't stop them from trying every time. I think that is very interesting
