U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis just handed down the written opinion version of her preliminary injunction order, regarding use of force by federal agents in Chicago.

It's the one already put on hold by the 7th Circuit.

It's 233 pages.

JUST IN: Border Patrol is preparing to end its immigration enforcement operation in Charlotte, nearly a week after the agency first deployed agents to the state’s most populated city, two officials at DHS tell NBC News.

Please do submit a comment if you live in Illinois. This is a practice that causes active harm to inmates, separates them even more from external support systems, and even makes it harder for U.S. attorneys to communicate with incarcerated clients
NEW — Illinois residents can submit comments to state leaders by Nov. 24 to oppose mail scanning, which allows prison officials to scan physical mail and reproduce it into digital copies.

Criminal justice advocates say the practice doesn’t make prisons safer.

I think part of this is that anyone who actually makes art knows how hard it it to get as good as you want to be, and knows that just showing and telling people how they do it is only the first step. They still have to put in the work.
In my experience, many artists LOVE explaining tricks of the trade. People often go out of their way to make free tutorials for no reason other than to share it. It’s so anti-human to pretend art has ever been anything but a social activity that is small d-democratic.
The "Frieren angle" thing, apart from just being delightful, also completely demolishes the pathetic "AI is democratising art" argument. Someone struggling with a difficult drawing received advice from hundreds of strangers who just wanted to help them improve their art.

I have a cousin who has been a Coastie for like twenty years, and he's way too professional to bitch about stuff like this (let alone the parade of indignities that is standard issue in Coast Guard life), but you can feel the morale problems radiate off him every time we talk.

The Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) started using mail scanning at all prisons in September and could make it a permanent practice soon. This takes away the ability of incarcerated people to touch their physical mail, including letters/photographs from family. thetriibe.com/2025/11/crim...

I'm watching one of the ds9 mirror universe episodes in German in the hotel room while I wait for Russ's late train and I have to say, a 90s era holocaust analogy hits different both in German and in 2025.

What level of language learning is "if I don't fuck up the 1st sentence, most Germans will continue to speak to me in German instead of switching to English. But if I stumble over the first sentence (like today when ordering Kaffee, bitte, uhhh Schwartz? Nicht klein?) people still switch to English"
