Rebooting this thread, because I just got an MP3 player for swimming, and my MP3 collection biases heavily towards pre-streaming music. Let's see how well my teenage music taste holds up!
You know what? I'm going to do a thread of music. Any time a song pops into my head, I'll post it here. Any genre, any era, any language, if I like it, I'll skeet it.

Let's start with something positive and uplifting. Vienna Teng feels like the most Bluesky musician out there. youtu.be/U4n_8R5lKnw

The party line split on aliens is NOT what I expected at all. Was Trump making publishing UFO files a weirdly big part of his campaign actually his idea of a push for voters across the aisle?

[I apologise in advance]. Fifteen years of prime ministerial travel ruined me for the real world. Planes held for you if there was traffic on the M25. No safety rules. When I flew on a real plane after a couple of years, I caused an incident because I'd forgotten you can't stand up on landing.
The one time I got to travel on a Prime Ministerial plane, the thing that sticks in my mind is that it turns out to be entirely OK to stand around chatting over a glass of champagne *while taxying to the runway*, so long as you sit down for the actual take-off. Any safety announcement? Forget it.

yes I don't really see how you can go "oh yikes these people have changed their political views incredibly quickly, mostly because of what Very Online people talk about on social media" and also think that people who went from never talking about gender to calling trans women predators are....normal
I don’t like subtweeting people I consider online friends, but there is a subset of people who are very worried about the ongoing radicalisation of our political elite but won’t ever acknowledge the echoes with the radicalisation of their colleagues on trans rights
And few who are sympathetic to us, some who are friendly with me on here, will ever stick their head above the parapet

When can you declare an emergency over?

The 5p “emergency” petrol tax cut was introduced in March 2022, to offset a spike in prices

They are now about 30p down on that month, & about 50p down on the absolute peak

Much to agree with here, notably on Labour's bewildering lack of interest in what 2010-24 governments actually did in policy terms. But this - something we have known for well over a century! - just cannot be repeated too often.

I'm kind of in awe. I remember when the only fake train slop Facebook would give you was the photoshopped triangle train over and over. Now you can get infinite hallucinatory railway fever dreams straight from the delirious id of Timothy Potter, Trainspotter.

Of all the American holidays, Thanksgiving is the one we *should* have borrowed. There's a big Harvest-shaped gap in the modern British calendar.
Since I’m English, I don’t go in for Thanksgiving myself, but it’s a feast I happen to love, and this week I have a few suggestions for it, kicking off with the Turkey Breast Stuffed with Italian Sausage and Marsala-Steeped Cranberries that is #RecipeOfTheDay! www.nigella.com/recipes/turk...
Turkey Breast Stuffed With Italian Sausage and Marsala-Steeped Cranberries
I know it might sound a bit of a faff, but take it from me that stuffing a whole double breast joint is very much easier than stuffing and rolling a single breast joint, as is more commonly found in s...

Oh god, he's trying to talk like Trump, isn't he? "My beloved working class", "cruel and deeply disrespectful", "very beautiful party", it's like if you asked an LLM to write a Trump speech - and not even one of the more advanced LLMs.

At university, our statistical mechanics lecturer had grown up in the Soviet Union and he told us that this was how his apartment complex had been heated - one huge heat pump in the river that worked even in deep Russian winter. Can't find anything online about Soviet-era heat pumps though
Most people hear “heat pump” and think of small air-source units at home. But Germany is building one of the world’s largest heat pumps in Mannheim: a 162 MW river-source system using heat from the Rhine.

Big reminder that heat-pumps scale far beyond households — they can decarbonise whole cities.

To be fair, it started going downhill long before the LLMs came along, around the time it started saying "Well, we certainly don't want to become overrun with spam, but if spammers did want to flood our search results, here's how they'd do it *wink wink*"
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea
