In the midst of the violence, let’s allow ourselves to be inspired by the heroism that is on display here.

Right now, it is not an exaggeration to say, Minnesotans are putting their lives on the line to fight for their city, protect their neighbors, and defend the Republic against tyranny.

A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

rethuglicans commonly look at the upper midwest and go “oh there’s a ton of germans there of course they’ll be That Kind of german”

wrong bitch. we all came over in the 1860s and immediately signed up to kill slavers
Minnesota has one of the largest Nordic ancestry percentages in the country (and tons of Germans, too). There's a ton of Norwegian and Swedish-established colleges, churches, towns, etc. ICE and MAGA were *definitely* betting on those "pure blood Norse" helping them out, instead of being good people
ICE and MAGA really did bet the farm on all of Minneapolis’s white people going “oh yes, please take away our disgusting, evil non-white-foreigner neighbors, oh thank you so much.”

it’s beautiful that they’ve been proven incredibly wrong about that - may the rest of the country do the same.

I think our constitutional order collapsed the day the supreme court handed down their execrable, lawless immunity opinion. What we're seeing now is just the logical working out of the violent authoritarian state that the supreme court legalized.

One thing that irks me: people keep calling the folks on the streets in Minneapolis protestors. They are not generally there to protest, they are there to observe and document. This is the product of organizing and mutual aid. It is telling that these acts of citizenship are seen as protest!

it’s not surprising to learn afterwards Renee and Alex were good people, because they died doing something objectively good: protecting more vulnerable people from ICE, putting their white bodies on the line

but it’s soul-crushing that their morality needs to matter more than the shooter’s does

This is (*checks notes*) after a Federal District Judge ordered them not to use chemical weapons on observers.

ICE is a collection of lawless, cruel, racist thugs. Defund them, and prohibit their non-elected federal employment for the next 20 years.
It's cool that these guys just use pepper spray casually now, against people who are wholly within their rights, without a moment's hesitation. Several shots of them using it as they climb into their cars and drive away, not even a pretense of urgency or need. Just a parting "fuck you" to them.
This is what happened in our neighborhood yesterday. ICE snatched a human being off of our streets, roughed them up badly, and then pepper sprayed legal observers as they documented it all. This is a daily occurrence happening all throughout Minnesota right now.

As it happens though, the framers of the US constitution did say it: in the 4th amendment, the 5th, the 10th, etc.

What they didn’t provide for is federal immigration enforcement of any kind, only “a uniform rule of naturalization.” Nor did they give the federal government a plenary police power.
It goes without saying that in the US you’re not supposed to have a masked secret police that snatches people off the streets without knowing if they’ve committed a crime. That’s about as basic a requirement for a democracy as exists.
Having seen several abductions up close, it is really hard to convey how much the thing they’re doing is roaming in military convoys until they see someone who is alone and isn’t white, and then jumping out in large numbers, pulling them into a van, and screeching off, all in 90 seconds or so.

Trump is ordering his untrained goon army to go into states that did not vote for him to kill and maim people. That is the story.

If this is about "border protection," from "drug fueled" countries in South and Latin America: why isn't ICE in Texas or Arizona or fucking FLORIDA.

Oh wait, I know!

This is NOT symbolic. If Dems adopt this position as a caucus, ICE get reined in. Full stop. Not after Trump, not after the midterms - NOW. Call your Dem rep and senators and tell them to back this play today.
The Congressional Progressive Caucus, which has nearly 100 members, announced its members will oppose any new funding for immigration enforcement until "meaningful" reforms are put in place. www.huffpost.com/entry/doj-fe...

a queer woman lightly mocked an ICE officer so they shot her wife right in front of her. now they’re trying to justify it by making it a capital crime to mock them

in many ways that’s a core tenet of right-wing ideology: Lesser People should be forbidden (by force if necessary) to laugh at you
This is appalling: Top DOJ officials are actively pushing for a criminal investigation into the widow of Renee Good, leading prosecutors to quit en masse, NYT is reporting.

Who in the White House ordered DOJ to do this? That's the next thing to establish.

this is all to say that should democrats win the house and senate this november, they should hold similarly dramatic — which is to say televised and highly publicized — hearings on the conduct of ICE and CBP, with testimony from victims. we want as much of *this* as possible in the record. (3/?)
ICE detained Arlit Maria Martinez on her way to work. 2 days later, her 15 yo son died of cancer. They wouldn't let her out to say goodbye. The family had planned to move back to Mexico prior to the cancer diagnosis but stayed for his treatment. Now, Mr Martinez has lost his wife to ICE & his son.

The mother's family pleaded with federal officers for her release from custody to say her final goodbyes to her son, but their requests went unanswered.

Congress needs to push back hard on this.

Reminder that these kind of door-to-door “general warrants” are both explicitly illegal and also a major trigger for the American Revolution.
A video of ICE agents conducting door-to-door searches today in Minneapolis

The homeowner requests a warrant repeatedly, is told they don't require one, then is told they're getting it, then the agents storm in anyway

They also point a taser at her to try and disrupt filming

The animating force at the heart of US conservatism currently is incandescent rage at the mere idea of women's autonomy and independence. An image of a smiling woman who looks insufficiently deferential for their tastes riles them up enough to tear up the social contract.
this is all it’s really about for them. Not domestic policy, not “economic anxiety”, just an endless desire to punish stand-ins for the Mommy who forced them take a bath, even if it tanks their own quality of life.

The things we are defending are so very basic. The old John Locke stuff. Government by consent of the governed. Not voluntarily enslaving ourselves to the whims of armed agents of the state. Which the other side gladly and willingness does, which is why we shall overcome.
When Renee Good said "I'm not mad at you" what the ICE goon heard was "I'm not scared of you."

That's what enraged him. The populace wasn't fully terrorized and cowed into submission yet, so he acted to make that happen.

If you want the economy to function & grow, you can't treat 16% of the entire workforce as "not real jobs." It's not only offensive, racist, & sexist (yes, again, public employees are disproportionately female & non-white, which is part of why they hate us). It's also epically bad economic policy.
Federal workers are disproportionately female, nonwhite, & urban, esp. in agencies being cut (nwlc.org/resource/att...). So, along w/ the general offensiveness, this is yet another case of the double standard about respect for "Real Folkz" applied to the two parties, where only rural white men count
Kevin Hassett on government workers: "They're sitting doing government work that isn't much value."
