Who is brave enough to praise the new boss?, asks The Atlantic.

I am, The Atlantic answers
One Atlantic writer, Sally Jenkins, asking to be ratioed by imaginary thought police because she likes another Atlantic writer, Caitlin Flanagan's, praise for a third, failed writer, Bari Weiss, who is famous for trying to get people with opinions she doesn't approve of fired, but now runs a news network, and is thus in need of The Atlantic's generous support

You are exactly right. Existing law and legal institutions have failed to protect us. There is no smooth return to the status quo ante. More destruction is required before rebuilding can begin.

I take Platner to be opening the door to a discussion of consequences. I'm hoping we'll all demand that discussion.

And I say "retribution" (and not some politer word like "accountability") designedly. What's needed is punishment. Swift, severe, and top to bottom.
cjsprigman.bsky.social
Yeah, I'm not a doomerist and consider doomerism as weakness.

Sort of? It's more accurate to say that *federal district court judges* are protecting us, until partisan GOP appellate and especially supreme court judges undo their work.

Federal judges are protecting We The People from a tyrannical president:

Accountability and retribution overlap. I use the word retribution b/c it's not polite and it emphasizes the punishment aspect, which, as far as I can see, is what people want. Accountability is bloodless elite-speak.
cjsprigman.bsky.social
See? It's not so hard for a Democrat to promise retribution. Retribution is necessary, and it's right.

We have armed secret police kidnapping people off the street based on the color of their skin.

When we win: we will haul them before a Senate committee. The masks will come off. There will be consequences.

Here’s an idea: you could just not accept the emergency petition and let the process play out as it ordinarily does. Ridiculous

Amy Coney Barrett defends heavy use of the shadow docket: "If we wrote a long opinion, it might give the impression that we have finally resolved the issue, and in none of these cases have we finally resolved the issue."

At first i thought the majority on the court was just a bunch of hardcore gop partisans with brains pickled in right wing propaganda but after seeing them do these softball book tour interviews with right wing outlets I'm convinced they're just neutral arbiters doing their best.

When this ends--and it will end--this fucker should be headed for a jail cell, from which I hope he will never emerge.

Just override them legislatively and strip courts’ jurisdiction to review. Like I said: existing law and institutions have failed to protect, so they no longer bind.
cjsprigman.bsky.social
What’s needed is a special tribunal and new laws fit for purpose. Continuity with existing law is not a priority. Existing law has failed. The priority is swift severe punishment. If we fail at that, we will never rid our ourselves of fascism.

Nor should retribution be limited to prosecution under existing law and through existing legal channels. Both have proved entirely inadequate to protect protecting our rights.

When the GOP loses power--and they will--I do not want to hear Democrats asking us to sing kumbaya. I want retribution. From Donald Trump on down to these masked thugs.

“YOU hit HER.”

CHICAGO - Trump’s ICE goons ram into a passing car after snatching someone, then brutally drag the female driver of the car they hit out of her car with guns drawn and arrest her too. (Her brother says she’s a citizen)

It's a long and deeply researched interview, and Remnick's extremely well-thought-through questions reveal a lot about Mamdani's character and ideas. I think you will find the exchange surprising and heartening. /end

I have many friends in NYC who have questions, and some fear, about what appears to be the likelihood that NYC voters will elect Zohran Mamdani as our next mayor. I ask those friends to watch this linterview of Mamdani by the New Yorker's David Remnick. 1/ www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbq7...

Maybe? I think polling on the issue means that you're taking it seriously. In any event, if Biden had released masked thugs onto the streets maybe that discussion would have happened even earlier.
cjsprigman.bsky.social
Depends on when you think the relevant break point was. By November of 2021, there was polling on Biden's age, and mainstream media outlets were reporting the results of that poll. By the summer of 2022, the NY Times was polling on it and writing repeated articles about age-related concerns.

Democrats should be promising that, when this administration loses power, they will be launching investigations into Kavanaugh (did he lie to Congress in his confirmation hearings?) and Thomas (did he fail to disclose gifts?). There's likely more judicial corruption to investigate. But start there.
