People who hope are motivated. They DO things. People in despair retreat into the corner. They STOP doing things. Dooming promotes despair and stains hope. Dooming harms the resistance. Dooming is part of the problem. Maybe don't doom at people?

Right now, Democrats have the power to defund and abolish ICE. We should do it. This is about right and wrong—and the murder we are seeing on the streets is just plain wrong. Anyone who supports funding DHS and ICE is supporting the murder of Americans. We can stop this.

GRR
USPS quietly changed its postmark rules — mail is no longer dated when you drop it off. The “official” date is when it hits automated sorting — sometimes days later

Which could have major implications for mail in voting — it’s a clever way to disenfranchise voters that’s going largely overlooked

Just a reminder that ICE didn't exist until 2002. It's not some longstanding institution that must be maintained. It was created as a knee-jerk reaction to 9/11, and it could be gotten rid of as easily as it was created.

On January 1, Illinois begins to regulate employer use of AI, making it a civil rights violation to use AI tools that result in discrimination based on protected characteristics in hiring, promotion, discipline, termination, or other employment terms and requiring notice of AI use. #AIBillofRights
Illinois becomes one of the few states to regulate employer use of AI. House Bill 3773 amends the Illinois Human Rights Act to make it a civil rights violation for employers to use AI tools that result in discrimination based on race, gender, age, or disability.

I mean this, academics. If you don't feel capable of embedding a trans perspective into your class for time or expertise reasons, ask me and I will come talk to them for you.

I will even try to relate it to paleogeology (or history, English, drama...), god help me.
I will come and do a guest lecture online for anyone, anytime, about this, for free. For any class.

I will tell your electromotor physics class about trans rights.

I will tell your paleogeology class about trans rights.

Just ask me. I will do this.

Once more preaching to the choir (I hope):
If GC people were really concerned about women's safety and rights, they'd be focusing on this, not persecuting a minority in an effort to scrub them from existence.
“Women change their travel plans, their routines, and their lives out of fears for their safety in public, while far too many perpetrators continue to roam freely,” Lady Elish Angiolini KC said trib.al/u0d1SVa

This is real power!
I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Why this prediction? Because translators and copywriters* are already being offered lower rates to 'copy edit' superficially plausible AI slop instead of being paid decently to do the job properly.
*Freelance advertising, trade press, instruction manual etc work is how many authors pay the bills.
I wish more reporting on this made the point that novelists won't be displaced by LLMs suddenly producing literature instead of story mulch, but because decision makers focused only on the bottom line, who don't understand what makes a good book, will be persuaded story mulch has got 'good enough'.

New research by @mctd.bsky.social shows the impact of generative AI on authors in the UK. They found over a third of novelists report their income has already been negatively impacted by AI and 85% expect their future income will be negatively impacted.
