". “When the raids hit, and I see my community out en masse, I feel myself transformed by the bravery, innovation and determination of my neighbors to keep each other safe and defend our shared belonging.”
But for now, while we need to remain vigilant, support our neighbors & do what we can to support folks who are preparing in other cities, I hope folks here in Chicago will also take a breath, hug each other, and take some pride in how we've shown up for each other. This is who we are, and I love us.
In Chicago, We Run Toward Danger Together
"Faced with unrelenting state violence, Chicagoans have refused to be cowed," says Mariame Kaba.

There have been reports of DHS sources saying they plan to deploy four times as many agents here in March. Whether that's accurate or not, I think we all knew that if they opted out of the deep winter in Chicago, they'd be back after the thaw. We need to synthesize what we've learned and prepare.

Bovino and many of his agents are headed to another city. Reports indicate that Charlotte and NOLA are upcoming targets. But there will still be ICE attacks in Chicago, as there were before, and we need to remain responsive. We also have a lot of deep prep work to do, bc they will be back in force.

Anyway, it's fine. I don't actually believe there is a both sides to snatching tamale ladies off the streets, that's just my one weird thing.

Got turned down on a piece about ICE in Chicago for an international news org because they believed I couldn’t be objective about my neighbors getting kidnapped. And well, guilty as charged I guess.

New — While some states have received SNAP benefits for November and USDA is supposedly pushing through all federal payments soon, that doesn’t erase the psychological terror of the last few weeks.

I spoke with 20+ SNAP recipients in 16 states about preparing for a possible future with no food:
The voices of SNAP
Recipients have become political pawns. They explained, in their own words, what Trump withholding funds has been like.

god i fucking miss magazines. but a resurgence of mass appeal educated consumer vibe sassy all of the too-expensive magazines that i can't name that st marks bookshop would generously let us all thumb through (carefully, carefully) for free on the internet would also be very welcome 💜
broken record on this but a similarly great beat for left wing media would be covering arts and culture and not just focusing primarily on politics and current events because there's a massive void there right now
it does seem like there’s a major—though potentially fleeting—opportunity to invest in left-wing media. more than a million people in the most populous city in america just enthusiastically elected a democratic socialist and the world is watching. putting $$ towards left media rn is good business.

Wisconsin State Senator confirms SNAP recipients in the state have received their November benefits.
Great news! Because of a recent court order, November SNAP benefits for Wisconsin recipients were made available overnight. Members should feel free to use the funds as they normally would.

NEWS — The Oregon Department of Human Services has issued 100% of November SNAP benefits, per an alert on their website. I've received reports that the funds have already hit recipients' EBT accounts.

100% correct, the legal term is "duress". Legal documents, whether confessions, wills, or other contracts are considered invalid if the person who signed was in fear of imminent harm or death as a result of refusal to put pen to paper.

Her husband was at Broadview one month and she was never able to talk to him. Not until he was already in Mexico. He had been in Chicago for 20 years. Her husband shared that the numbers of people there were astounding. It just makes me think how many people that are not counted/just disappeared.

He said that the agents would throw food at them to eat. The agents threatened to withhold food for a week and to beat him up if he didn't sign deportation papers. He said he saw others refuse and get beaten/receive no food. He signed because he was afraid.

Her husband told her that detainees at Broadview had to get up at 5am to get in line for one bathroom. He often peed himself. One time he had to wait until 2pm to use the bathroom. You could only use the bathroom once a day. He said the agents would beat you if you used the bathroom on yourself.

A family friend was telling us about what her husband shared about his experience in Broadview before he was deported back to Mexico. She's been sharing to friends and family because she's just in disbelief & horror what her husband told her. She wasn't able to talk to him until he was in Mexico.
