It is interesting to think about how the resistance is panning out throughout the city. In the northwest side, there are a lot of Latine leaders, elected and grassroots, that seem to be leading the way to protect immigrant residents. People throughout the city banding together in community.

That’s a key to the determined resistance to ICE in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago; it’s a racial plurality neighborhood (about a third white, about a third Latino, remaining third Black & Asian), & the non-Latinos have banded together to protect their neighbors from Kavanaugh sweeps.

The fact that protests now feature people who don’t normally have to worry about what might happen to them in an adverse encounter with security forces is a HUGE DEAL.

It means that the “real” victims don’t have to suffer alone. It means that some people care about something more than themselves

A queer Latine lead (the actor is nonbinary) with a main Latine cast. These movies get buried but it's worth seeing. I really loved the relationship of Diego Luna's character Valentin and Tonatiuh's character Luis Molina, a queer window dresser.

There's been so little promotion of Kiss of the Spider Woman, but it's a worthwhile movie to see. Set in the midst of Argentina's military junta, it is centered on the story of an imprisoned queer Latino character and his dreams. It's a feminine & queer movie w/ a revolutionary romantic spirit.

As I saw the video of residents in Albany Park being tear gassed earlier today, I thought about the Little Village community that was enveloped in dust in early 2020 from a smokestack demolition. The deployment of tear gas feels so connected to EJ and the fight for breathable air.

So Kilmer Abrego-Garcia will not challenge a deportation to Costa Rica, who has agreed to for him residency, but DHS won’t agree to send him there because it’s not cruel enough.

For weeks, Mr. Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national who is married to a U.S. citizen, has made clear that he would not challenge his deportation if he were sent to Costa Rica, which has promised him legal residency and guaranteed that he would not be sent back to El Salvador.

But the Trump administration has refused to deport him to Costa Rica, and in an earlier hearing this week, Judge Xinis pressed the administration to consider the option or clarify why it was unacceptable.

Researchers elsewhere in the world have identified associations between chemical weapons and miscarriage. United Nations observers recorded miscarriages after Israeli police used tear gas on Palestinian civilians during the 1988 uprisings, leading to stricter rules on when the weapons should be used. Toxicology researchers led by Andrei Tchernitchin of the University of Chile found enough evidence linking spontaneous abortion and a type of tear gas to convince the Chilean government to suspend tear gas use in 2011. And the Nobel Peace Prize–winning organization Physicians for Human Rights argued in 2012 that Bahrain had violated U.N. guidelines on chemical weapons use, based in part on increased miscarriages.

These weapons should not be used on anyone under any circumstances. The 1925 Geneva Protocol was intended to ban military use of chemical weapons in warfare. However, the relevant treaties don’t extend to nations using such weapons on their own people. That means police and other government forces are free to tear-gas unarmed civilians in the name of law enforcement, while soldiers could be prosecuted for war crimes if they did the same to armed combatants.

It is essentially legal for police to endanger pregnancies by assaulting protesters with likely abortifacients.

We smelled tear gas at our house in an LA suburb, 20 miles from where it was deployed. Thankfully it dissipated in about a week. I think it shows as particulates, so watch that on weather reports.
