#OTD in 1941 General Mason-MacFarlane notified the USSR that convoy PQ-5 was on its way to Arkhangelsk. Among other tanks, the convoy carried Matilda CS tanks with 3" howitzers, finally supplying foreign tank units with HE firepower. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

Work to mount the 75 mm L/43 gun in the VK 30.01 (H) heavy tank began #OTD in 1941, but it turned out to be impossible without a radical redesign of the turret. This was the final nail in the coffin for this project as in 1942 no one needed a heavy tank with a short 75mm. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

This Hellenistic bronze statuette depicts a thickly-muscled craftsman, identified by his short tunic and by the wax tablets tucked into his belt. He may represent a famous or mythological figure - Daidalos, who built the labyrinth at Knossos, or the sculptor-architect Phidias. 🏺 1/

Unsurprising to anyone working currently in AI, digital security, or both. Fundamental security flaws roughly equivalent to the Simpson's parody of the Get Smart TV show intro with Mr. Burs and Mr. Smithers where there's an unsecured screen door entrance at the end.

Hubble image of Arp 157, also known as NGC 520.

Two disk galaxies began colliding about 300 million years ago, forming the mess that is NGC 520. The disks of the two original galaxies have merged together, but the nuclei have not yet coalesced.
