so a few (??) years ago I did winter cards for people. I think I’d like to do that again, so if you’d like a non-holiday-specific winter good wishes card from me, lmk. obviously you have time, since it is only October.

The New School was founded by Columbia University professors who wanted a university run by the faculty with minimal administration. For over 100 years it has been a unique institution with progressive values and incredible students and faculty from Ai Weiwei to Hannah Arendt. We are devastated.
Last week, the New School issued voluntary separation & early retirement offers to 40% of the full-time faculty & the majority of non-union staff. These cuts to the bone are an ideological attempt to decimate historic spaces of critical inquiry & social justice. Share our statement tr.ee/qQBIDCpIuj

yes, this is why you really should try to get it if you can, because we are making it so much dangerous for the people who can not!
One, I agree with this idea.

But two, I want to point out that if you're immunocompromised, there are certain vaccines that you can't get. The MMR vaccine is one of them because it's a live virus vaccine.
If you are worried this is too big an executive function barrier you can go to a pharmacy and they will probably just jab you. That is what I did.

I'm not saying it's necessarily the right way to do this, that is just how much I am not fucking around with the measles

This is definitely big need design energy in that he ignores entirely that cheeses are round because it's important for it to dry at an even speed. It would have been much easier historically to make square cheese forms. We don't do that because square cheeses don't age evenly.
I hate how much I enjoyed this

ProPublica spoke to about 150 people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.”

We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words.

So happens now is this rise measles will also create a rise in all vaccine-preventable illnesses (and other illnesses) b/c everyone who recovers will essentially be reduced to immune system infancy.

It will create a cascade of illnesses, especially in people who will refuse new vaccinations.

I don't recall where I saw it, but someone one said that art is how we decorate space and music is how we decorate time, and while that might not be a very helpful definition, I do think it's a very beautiful one.

Go to your doctor and get your measles titers checked to make sure you are still immune and if not get re-vaccinated. It’s more and more likely all of us are going to eventually come in contact with it.
The thing about measles is that it’s the only known virus that triggers immune amnesia - it causes your immune system to forget everything it has previously learned. Meaning you essentially reset to zero and are now at risk of basically everything.

It can take 2-3 years to get immunities back.

I sometimes teach in Providence. In the classroom where I most frequently teach, there's a section labeled for where students are supposed to go for active shooters. It is a cliche of a phrase, but I want to echo the Professor here and say: it does not have to be this way.
AS A PROFESSOR, I AM ASKING

HOW ARE OUR STUDENTS SUPPOSED TO LEARN IN THESE CONDITIONS?

HOW ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO GO TO SCHOOL AND TAKE EXAMS KNOWING SOMEONE MIGHT JUST SHOW UP WITH AN EASY TO ACQUIRE AUTOMATIC WEAPON?

HOW??????????

not everything that breaks me leaves me smaller
the sound of stars above snow
the taste of your laugh against falling leaves
the creatures who fly & call & witness
when you broke open my heart, it didn’t make me less
though I was cleaved asunder
my soul rent, gasping
even the sky fits inside now

Tonight Stúfur, 3rd of Iceland's 13 Yule Lads, comes down from the mountains. He sneaks into houses and eats the crust left on pans after cooking.

All the children put a shoe in the window for him to put a treat or a little gift in - if they have been good that is. The bad children get a potato.

A (quite) young movie lover said to me recently, "Not everybody can afford a DVD player," and I said "How much do you think a DVD player costs?"

He said, "I don't know, like $500?"

Those of us who advocate physical media are maybe not doing the best job of messaging.

I know of at least four friends now who got duped into buying scam products recently, so I thought I'd share some tips I've learned from InfoSec folks:
- Don't trust links on social media; always go to the source to verify/buy
- Is the price too good to be true? Then it is
