Ohhh I just fell down a tiny rabbit hole. Looks like surface predation of healthy waterfowl isn’t super common, so the deeper water probably is safer for them.

I'm intrigued how the surf scoters operate near where I have been taking pelican photos at sunset.
Every night the past couple I see half a dozen of them fly out to the ocean from the harbor.
Do they think the open ocean is safer than the harbor at night? Or just a food situation? 🪶

Saw @1184outdoors.bsky.social report the winter thieves have been heavily looting the berry bushes in a location that's not well photographed. I had to scope it out this morning. Not much luck for up close eating shots, but it was fun to watch them buzz around from a distance. #birds
