Today in Portland, a fed shooting pepper balls from the roof of the ICE facility was so eager to aim for people’s heads, that after shooting one photographer in the head and another in the upper arm, they accidentally shot a DHS agent in the head. This photo shows the moment of impact;
Riot cops standing a street with less-lethal weapons, and one in a gas mask has a cloud of pepper dust around his helmet.

There are ballistic goggles that are rated for being hit with projectiles, do NOT wear swim goggles. If it doesn’t pop out your eye, then you’ll lose it when it shatters the plastic.

There is PPE within a number of price ranges that ACTUALLY protect you. Please don’t be an idiot, get the right shit
thrasherxy.bsky.social
Pro tip to reporters and protesters: always have swim goggles in your pockets or bags. They’re small, $10 and if tear gas is used, slip them on & no matter how much you cough, you’ll still be able to SEE without burning eyes.

Swim goggles can't survive a munition hitting you in the face and can cause your eye to pop out. Invest in your safety. Get goggles rated for ballistics and a good seal.

Out of most categories of reporting, I think “political reporting” has remained really homogenous, which explains some conventions. (To add, political reporting remains prized and reliant on access. I think the whole category should be upended — everything is politics!)
gregsargent.bsky.social
The conventions of political reporting today are not well equipped to handle this concerted use of pretexts for instrumental purposes and the bottomless bad faith they employ. Grasping the industrial-scale deception at the core of MAGA politics is essential. 6/

The Texas Military Department confirmed to @taskandpurpose.com it had replaced some of the 200 National Guard troops sent to Chicago for not being "in compliance" with validation standards. This came after photos of heavyset NG members were widely mocked. taskandpurpose.com/news/texas-n...

I truly believe a big reason why Democrats are failing to appropriately respond to the moment is a pathological refusal to admit that there were aspects of the American status quo pre trump that were extremely fucked up and unjust

One thing that can help is disabling app tracking on your phone. VPNs and online tracker blockers can help, too. But it’s nearly impossible to avoid it. You can make it harder by also not bringing your phone to protests or other first amendment activities.

Beverly Hills PD is another agency that uses it. A lot of departments purchase it using Homeland Security antiterrorism grants. They’ll keep justifying the purchases of it because of the Olympics and other large events coming to LA.

I wrote about LAPD has been using the same technology since 2022 in 2023. I updated it to include their most recent “audit” of it which found there’s been no impact on the public’s privacy. Other California depts use Penlink, too:

Remember that all of this is in defense of a detention center where people are being held in horrible conditions after being kidnapped off the street for no reason.

Again today, local police outside Broadview just aggressively arrested more protesters. Tough to tell exactly how many, but looks like 3-4 people were just detained.

Quick update on what we just saw here—*before curfew*, ISP troopers, Broadview PD and CCSO deputies began menacing demonstrators outside the ICE facility. Several arrests.

Pepper ball guns at the ready, a bit of a standoff going with remaining protesters. All people are doing is playing music.

ICE left David, a 17-year-old boy, stranded on the side of Interstate 20 after pulling over his immigrant father, Hector, in Mississippi.

David began running in the scorching sun after the car and watched as it disappeared from sight—soon headed to a Louisiana ICE prison.

Here's their story.

So fishy!!! I actually made a separate public records request just to learn what was the special technology they claimed to use to recover the deleted messages. I even asked for the user manual, because that’s obviously not exempt. They refuse to provide any info.

‭ Re:‬‭ California Public Records Act Request‬
‭ Dear Mr. Rose:‬
‭ This letter responds to your California Public Records Act (“CPRA”) request, dated March 26,‬
‭ 2025 to the Office of the Mayor of Los Angeles (“Office”) seeking the following:‬
‭ Please‬‭ provide‬‭ documentation‬‭ related‬‭ to‬‭ the‬‭ "specialized‬‭ technology"‬‭ used‬‭ to‬
‭ recover‬‭ approximately‬‭ 125‬‭ of‬‭ Mayor‬‭ Bass's‬‭ text‬‭ messages‬‭ that‬‭ were‬‭ provided‬
‭ to the LA Times under a different CPRA request referenced here:‬
‭ https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-03-26/mayor-karen-bass-text-m‬
‭ essages-provide-vivid-window-into-early-fire-response‬
‭ Specifically, please provide:‬
‭ 1.‬‭ The‬‭ most‬‭ recent‬‭ user‬‭ guides‬‭ or‬‭ similar‬‭ documentation‬‭ related‬‭ to‬‭ the‬
‭ "specialized technology."‬
‭ 2.‬‭ Invoices,‬‭ receipts,‬‭ or‬‭ similar‬‭ financial‬‭ records‬‭ for‬‭ how‬‭ the‬‭ "specialized‬
‭ technology" was acquired or subscribed to, dating back to at least 2020.‬
‭ 3.‬‭ Emails‬‭ with‬‭ City‬‭ staff‬‭ (including‬‭ the‬‭ Mayor,‬‭ Mayor's‬‭ staff,‬‭ and‬‭ other‬‭ City‬
‭ employees) about this "specialized technology" from Jan 1, 2025 to today.‬
‭ For‬‭ the‬‭ purposes‬‭ of‬‭ searching,‬‭ please‬‭ use‬‭ the‬‭ name‬‭ or‬‭ brand‬‭ of‬‭ the‬‭ technology,‬
‭ software, equipment, or otherwise in order to produce pertinent records.‬
‭ (“Request”)‬
‭ The Office has conducted a search and determined that there are non-exempt records in its‬
‭ possession responsive to your Request. The responsive records contained attorney-client‬
‭ communications and work product, and so have been withheld pursuant to Government Code‬
‭ Hello,

Please re-open this request and ensure that you fulfill your duty to assist and search, pursuant to California law and court ruling described below.

For example only:
If your response means that the Office of the Mayor doesn't have the records but a specific IT office or finance office does, this is a practical basis that can be overcome and you must suggest the correct place to request such records.
If my use of the phrase "specialized technology" is not appropriately worded, you must provide assistance to help me rephrase the request.
If there are releasable records related to the "specialized technology" which are not as obvious to request as user guides and billing information, you must assist me in identifying those releasable documents as they may be responsive to the purpose of the request.
To be clear, the purpose of this request is to understand the nature of the "specialized technologies" that the City of Los Angeles has to recover other records.

Thank you,
Adam
