This piece makes it sound totally normal that the police gets to decide whether or not to "work with" Mamdani as mayor, and it continues, as nearly all the paper's coverage, to wield normative terms like "moderate" and left" in a prejudicial way. www.nytimes.com/2025/11/16/n...

1) Please stop replying with the refusal to follow unlawful orders thing. I know, and I promise you troops deployed in the Caribbean are not seeing your reply to me on Bluesky. 2) This buildup isn't out of nowhere, this isn't a sudden "distraction." Navy has been amassing forces since August.

Paywalls are flawed, but reporting and editing and photography are full time jobs. Unless you have another monetization scheme in mind that works for the service newspapers provide, there isn’t a conversation

Please stop using language that suggests that people with criminal records are appropriate targets for this administration's violence. One in three adults has a criminal record. Stop playing sacrifice games with fascists. Stop surrendering entire categories of people in your own mind.

It’s not great journalism to only cite an anonymous source, and cite no sources to the other claims made in the story. At a minimum at least seek out other perspectives. Here’s a lawyer’s POV about the story from Reddit.

I wanted to share probably the most important sermon I’ve given and it’s while I’m being arrested. It’s torture pure and simple what happens at #Broadview. I’m ok, though I was thrown to the ground and choked with my pectoral cross. A review of the video shows I was peaceful - did I deserve this?

The “outside agitator” trope has always bugged me because it insinuates nobody can show up in solidarity if they live outside the imaginary city borders of a city. People can often neither pick the venue nor the issues, but they can pick whether to show up or not.
broadview mayor katrina thompson blames today’s brutality on “out-of-town protesters” who’ve “chosen their fists” over their voices.

does this look like cops “protecting [protesters’] free speech”?

Lots of new discourse in LA newspaper editorials, City Attorney op-ed, and LAPD press release basically asking:

Can LAPD shoot press?

The answer: NO!!

But all LA City officials do is deflect from the question.

This piece is right on the issues, and right on how great @susanseager.bsky.social is!

You can thank the LAPD for creating militarized policing. They used the shootout with the Black Panther’s and the Watts Uprising to justify its existence. Later on they’d use the 1984 Olympics and War on Drugs to further entrench the police as soldier, in equipment and mentality.
I simply refuse to accept that police ever have to look like this. this is just pure cosplay. it should be illegal for cops to be dressed like soldiers going to war.

They should study journalists’ brains like they do with football players after they die.
The emails that you’re seeing now are news in themselves, but that’s because of how they’re coming out—a congressional committee released them—& the context in which they’re being viewed. A guy emailing a reporter talking about old girlfriends or saying someone is “dirty” is not a whole news story.
