I am open to the idea that there are people who don't have and don't want to gain the skills to engage directly with their data but every single day that I do I learn the answer to a question you'd never even think to ask unless you were personally staring into the abyss of an uncleaned dataset.

I was trying to get fancy with it. Lesson learned.

☞☞ Hands-on reading ☜☜

The manicules in #rarebooks are fantastically diverse. Some are tiny & discreet, others take up half the margin; some have flowing sleeves, or even little faces.

They’re glimpses into the personality of readers/scribes highlighting passages worth reading.

Detail of a manicure and a little face gesturing towards the handwritten text of a manuscript in gothic script written on parchment. The man depicted seems angry. The manicure has a sleeve A manicule with a stretched sleeve drawn in red in the margins pointing towards a text in Gothic script written on parchment A manicule used to highlight a rubricated section title in a medieval manuscript written in gothic script on parchment A very large vaguely drawn manicule pointing towards text in gothic script written on parchment

Hardest I’ve ever been dragged is when an editor read my lede and said, “I think something got cut off at the top.”

Reader: It had not.

STEPHANOPOULOS: I didn't insinuate anything. I asked you whether Tom Homan accepted $50k as was heard on an audio tape recorded by the FBI in September 2024. You did not answer the question. Thank you for your time.

VANCE: No, George, I sai--

With all due respect to you and your dad’s take on the sacrament, which I completely respect, that’s not the kindest way to describe it in the context of me talking about my mom’s death.

Side note: The priest handed me the host over mom’s hospital bed, and I’ve sometimes thought that while she was too sick to receive herself, that day she served as the altar rail — the gate between this life and the next.

Ack yes you’re right, sorry!!!

When the Franciscan priest came to give my mom last rites, for example, he carried the Eucharist in a little circular metal box called a pix hung around his neck.

Christ was just as present in the Host inside that pix as in the most elaborate monstrance.

But again, the monstrance dramatizes it.

One small not-quite quibble here.

According to Catholic teachings, Christ is just as present in the Eucharist whether it’s being carried to detainees in a monstrance or a simple vessel.

But the monstrance is a particularly solemn and traditional way of dramatizing that presence.

For those not fluent in Catholic: refusing the Monstrance is not denying prisoners the Eucharist, it is refusing Christ himself, since Christ is present in the Monstrance.

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”
