Once again, "imagine getting to place a side bet on your kids soccer game" is an indicator of severe levels of degeneracy and in a healthier/more functional society, we would nuke these ppl & their entire business model from orbit
Oh, no it’s even worse than that. I was in a pitch meeting for one of these that said “imagine getting to place a side bet on your kid’s soccer game”. Their plan was to bet on people completing everyday activities
Fuckin people watching Netflix making prop bets on what minute of the episode we’re first gonna see Vecna. People betting on whether it’s gonna be a Toyotathon commercial or an Activia commercial. Just a little QR code in the bottom corner of every show asking you to bet on everything.

Electoral hedonic treadmill in full force. Is a 16 point over performance a disappointment? What about 18?

Sometimes I’m reading a thread about AI and kind of nodding along and suddenly I feel like I’m at “ape holders can use multiple slurp juices on a single ape” level comprehension.
i feel like people think about this weirdly.

a very large LLM is the function space necessary to contain everything on the lower-dimensional manifold of natural language, which is bounded by something other by the representational complexity of functions.

Other than a bunch that are wayyyy too personal to post into the aether, probably when some coworkers were arguing about who got to have me on their squad when the zombie apocalypse happened.
What is the best compliment you ever received? Putting aside whether or not you believed it.

Lot of thoughts about That Article, but one thing that made me scream. The cost of childcare was not zero! That our system devalues feminized care labor doesn’t make it actually free. Opportunity costs are a thing, childcare is more expensive because of Baumol, not because it was free before.

Rome-esque epic about the House of Valois-Burgundy.
If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

Science will often take you to unexpected and delightful places. In this study, researchers hypothesized that riders in a crowded subway car would be more likely to offer their seat to a pregnant person if there were someone in the subway car dressed as Batman 🧪🦇

Semaglutide has the weirdest side effect I’ve ever experience. I’m hyper sensitive to caffeine all of a sudden- I went from ~4 cups of coffee a day to a single Coke Zero hitting hard enough to be unpleasant. Overall it’s a great drug ime but that came out of left field.

My most woke opinion would make me the Main Character on here, so no thanks.

My second most woke opinion would catch a 3 day suspension.

#3 is that everything is gender, except for gender, which is race.

Name one person at the NYT other than Landon Thomas who did that. Just one! I'll take one!

This is why comparing the costs of healthcare writ large across generations is in many ways incoherent- it’s like asking if intercontinental flight is more expensive now than it was before WWI broke out.
This is especially true for medical care. Virtually any - any - type of cancer was a death sentence. The 5y survival rate for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 1960 was roughly 14%. Today it is roughly 95%.
It is genuinely hard for most people to grasp how poor the past was.

High level elected officials should get 7 figure income, have to put all their assets in a blind trust, and be subject to such withering and punitive financial disclosure arrangements that they won’t accept a ride home without reporting it.
The Mayor of New York only makes $260k. I bet there are police that make more than that in NY with overtime.

We need to pay elected leaders more money and stop pretending it's some sort of calling. They're managing hundreds of billions of dollars in investments and millions of people's lives.

Fun thing about Matty is that during the Biden years crime went down, deportations went up, unemployment and income inequality went down, and yet somehow even though the Biden WH did politics exactly how he’s asking we got…this.

It is kind of funny that these assholes spend so much time talking about The Founders this and The Founders that and at least half of the time if you actually look at what The Founders said, they were like "for the love of God do not do that shit"

I’ll admit, I did not wake up this morning thinking “Steve, you are going to discover a situation in which launching an FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile at a parade float would be morally praiseworthy” but, brave new world, such people in it, etc.
Evidently there was an Auschwitz-themed float in a Halloween parade in Pennsylvania.

The float was for a Catholic school, and to their credit the church immediately disavowed it.

Thing is, I don’t think high school kids did this entirely on their own. I’m guessing parents had to be involved.

The modal “Dems should do X” piece of “advice” from pundits should be understood as an attempt by a hostile pundit to advance a narrative that Democrats are failing to do X, and probably hostile towards X on principal, rather than advice to Dems to do X. This has the interesting consequence that
This right here, this exact sentence, is THE problem in American political journalism.

The IRA *was* cheap energy and good jobs! That was the whole bill! Democrats did precisely what political pundits are telling them to do and the pundits just ignore it.

I do love the perpetual “the American people are ignorant about Bad Thing. It give me no pleasure to report, from the most prestigious name in journalism, that Democrats have failed to effectively message on Bad Thing.” game from NYT journopoasters.
For context, Yglesias has written detailed threads and articles on his blog about how devastating Trump's proposed economic platform would be to the economy, inflation, and the deficit. This is the response from an NYT economics reporter.
