they are living with more material comforts than the vast majority of people on the planet, and any sort of redistributive system is going to have to squeeze them to give to people who aren’t in that position. Where they stand relative to some arbitrary absolute yardstick is neither here nor there.

It’s a good podcast. His PhD involved communication networks in the falling Roman Empire, he thinks about things in a pretty interesting way.

Yesterday I made a shitpost about how Greeks and Persians are white but Romans and Macedonians aren’t, and it had more internal coherence than this map.

Well, I understand the original thread better now, thanks for taking the time to explain!

so does this tie back to the initial post about distinguishing natural vs unnatural perplexity? if it’s not within a certain distance of natural language you can tell from the outside that it’s unnatural?

So, a weird enough string basically makes the pass through input for future layers weird/noisy as well, so it might cause some seemingly random spot to be the likelihood maximizing output?

Can you give an example or dive a bit more into the characteristic on-manifold activations?

In this case
“natural and unnatural layerwise perplexity even if you have a very low-entropy softmax” precisely.

Macedonians aren’t-the white vs nonwhite line passes through Thessaly.

It is a disaster, true, but it’s a disaster that so many punitively lefty types had such a poisoned media diet that they actually thought that Trump was outflanking Dems on any of the three issues.

Yeah, I read them this year, and it was frankly embarrassing that IRL the US chose to vote for fascism in a time of low crime and high employment, no dystopian fiction predicted a bunch of Americans just deciding to vote for national humiliation because they were bored.
