My first experience with a Walkman, Poole Quay 1980, was listening to a recently imported device, owned by a guy from Sire Records who played me tracks from the master tape of the yet to be released Remain in Light by Talking Heads. Adrian Belew blew my head off.
My niece (14) has just bought a Walkman and also wants a tape player for Christmas. Is this a thing?

A blast from my past - the Medieval Soldier database takes nearly 300,000 military service records from 1369-1453 and makes them available as a searchable database.

An invaluable resource for understanding medieval warfare, society and the English medieval state. Learn more in the link. 🗃️
We built a database of 290,000 English medieval soldiers – here’s what it reveals
We created the database in order to challenge assumptions about the lack of professionalism of everyday soldiers.

Absolutely this. “The space we make for drivel is going to destroy us”
let me tell you what is wrong with the world. I saw a video on the BBC with the title "should 4 year olds use face masks". I obvs did not watch. Of course a 4 year old should not use a face mask. They don't need skincare. They need literacy. ffs. The space we make for drivel is going to destroy us

Computer, please summarize everything PG Wodehouse ever wrote in ten seconds
rich dudes got freakier after butlers fell out of fashion, like say what you will about having domestic servants but clearly it was some sort of moderating force on old rich dudes having a fancy man follow you around saying shit like "oh dear sir, that wouldn't be very becoming"

Sad to hear that quintessential actor Jack Shepherd has died. It was great to see him recently in one of his major roles as Renfield in Dracula, to character roles in Budgie, Crown Court and countless other films and TV, his talent shone through. Rest in peace dear Jack.

type for books used to be set using little metal letters built into words in racks and then inked and pressed on to paper. If you had stock phrases you wanted to reuse a lot you could make a cast of them called a ‘stereotype’. The sound of them *clicking* into place, in French, is ‘cliché’
Man, everything is so bleak, anyone got a fun fact or little bit of trivia they want to share
