"The UK creative industries — which contributed £125 billion to the economy in 2024 and supported 2.4 million jobs — are being destroyed by an AI sector that, whatever its long-term potential, contributed just £11 billion in the same year and supported only 85,000 jobs."

This is from Darren Aronofsky’s AI content startup, and separate from it being narratively incoherent and rhythmically off, it is absolutely fucking bonkers how lifeless motion pictures are without actors OR even animators to breathe life into performances. These are corpses.
You don't have the be an avowed AI hater to be impressed without lifeless and unwatchable this is.

I agree that people should be given AI training.

They should be taught how to identify it, and what the risks (both direct and indirect) are. As part of a wider media literacy and scam awareness agenda.

Even on the pretense of “AI is the inevitable future”, this should come first.

A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

Thanks, brain.

2am was definitely the best time to get really worked up about an email that was never replied to 18 months ago.

Don't Quote Dunk, instead try reading ancient tomes of forgotten lore
If you hear a tapping, tis some visitor, or the wind and nothing more
If a raven flaps in through the shutter, do NOT ask what its lordly name is on the night's Plutonian shore

Favourite Bowie song, you say?

Today it’s this.

Over the years there have been many. Some are inextricably linked to certain times in my life, some have come into favour as my own experiences have shaped my life.

Tomorrow could be anything.

It’s been a rough year, so it’s a fairly limited selection of fiction/ autobiography* this year… but it’s been a quality year.

Yeah, but how else are they going to inevitably start charging you a subscription fee for basic functionality?

Sorry, clarification - I have an immediate need for an
Illustration to go with a translation of my short story Children of Dagon and wondered if anyone here had a piece showing a seal/human creature - ideally with a ruined city landscape - ready to go, that I could haggle for. Should be SFW
Any artists out there got an available (non AI) picture of what could be a bioengineered seal/aquatic human?

If you enjoy reading posts which have been written by someone who is really into that thing, then this is an annual treat.

I know almost nothing about Eastenders, I’m not going to watch Eastenders, but I love Sooz’s annual recaps.
Here it is, my big #EastEnders catch-up thread for people who only see it when they go home for Christmas with the family. Allow me to get you all caught up on the goings-on in Albert Square in its most explosive week of the year! KEEP THIS BY YOUR SIDE AT ALL TIMES.

Please share this widely. There have been 13 peer-reviewed critiques of the Cass Review, to the extent that academia regards it as pseudoscience, but so far all have been subject to organised censorship by mainstream media. This is the first time one has broken through. Oz Guardian only still.
Worked hard to get this into Guardian Oz & big props to @fiercemum.bsky.social for setting it up & Melissa Davey for publishing it. She will doubtless get loads of hassle from transphobes for it, but it needs to be out there.

I’m compliment-averse enough as it is, even when I know the person is being sincere.

The LLM chatbot tendency towards subservient flattery would be a deal-breaker all on its own, even without EVERYTHING else.
i'm fascinated by how much people love and are amazed by chat gpt saying "nice catch!" and "great observation!" because i personally find the condescension and obsequiousness the most skin-crawling thing about how LLMs "talk"
If we are banning cell phones for kids we need to be talking about banning chatbots for boomers
