Remember when every leader wanted their picture taken with Greta? She is still that truth teller, they just can't face the truth of their crimes.
Greta Thunberg arrested for holding a sign opposing genocide.

When peaceful protest is a crime, democracy is in deep trouble.

Happening under a Labour Government.

It's that time of the year. Time to count down our ten most popular episodes of a truncated season.

Our tenth most popular episode was Mark Webb's "Snow White", with @mistercinecal.bsky.social and @ciaramoloney.bsky.social.

Rachel Zegler, CGI dwarves and more!

i'm fascinated by how much people love and are amazed by chat gpt saying "nice catch!" and "great observation!" because i personally find the condescension and obsequiousness the most skin-crawling thing about how LLMs "talk"
If we are banning cell phones for kids we need to be talking about banning chatbots for boomers

You probably haven’t seen the disco roller musical extravaganza “Roller Boogie” (released on this day in 1979) — and here’s why you should: crookedmarquee.com/keep-the-cha...
Keep the Change, Bobby James: The Simple Pleasures of Roller Boogie — Crooked Marquee
There’s not an anniversary, or a news peg, or a new streaming or disc release. We just figure you probably haven’t seen this 1979 disco roller musical — and here’s why you should.

Because if you care about securely owning a movie that you love--as opposed to "owning" it only until a license agreement over which you have no control expires without warning--you need a DVD or Blu-ray. The hardware may be yesterday; the concern is very much of this moment.
Why do (us) old people want to burden Gen Z with our nostalgia for an antique piece of hardware in the first place?
A (quite) young movie lover said to me recently, "Not everybody can afford a DVD player," and I said "How much do you think a DVD player costs?"

He said, "I don't know, like $500?"

Those of us who advocate physical media are maybe not doing the best job of messaging.

There's a trick to John Hughes' pictures—probably an unconscious, instinctive choice...he never goes beyond a kid's point of view; even the supposedly adult characters are seen only in kids' terms. (1986)

Pointing out (because when else would I get to show off this research) that about 533 U.S.–produced features, from both major studios and independents, were released into theaters in 1957. In 2017, there were 131 given wide release, including independents. It's astounding how output has shrunk.

if i was one of them dervishes i'd rotate very slowly instead, sort of as a comment on our relationship with whirling, the social pressure to whirl in dervish communities, etc... it's not a statement AGAINST whirling, i'd clarify in an interview, only against whirling frivolously, without intention

i didn't think i had any real positive expectations for the academic job market because i'd heard all about the crisis of precarity, how hard it is to get a permanent job, people cobbling together part-time gigs on opposite sides of the country and bouncing from one temporary contract to another but
