The antisemitism envoy, Jillian Segal, is an Australian Government appointee, so her choices in her statement will have an outsize influence on the narrative going forward
ahhhh it sounds like the statement was from the "anti-semitism envoy", the Jewish Council of Australia @jewishcouncilau.bsky.social has been much more measured and avoided stoking strife. blacksky.community/profile/did:...
The Australian antisemitism envoy has made a pronouncement deliberately conflating support for Palestinians as being support for antisemitism, and trying to directly link the pro-Palestine marches to the antisemitic attack in Bondi.

a parent pointed out to me that her kid is just using bookmarks now to view their favourite channels while logged out rather than getting a single feed, and is newly getting ads and also the recent views can't be tracked any more via YouTube Family.

so it's less safe in every dimension!
The alleged harms of social media are either a) things that, while tragic, happen to kids without social media as well or b) completely invented by people who can't read scientific studies and misunderstand the direction of causality.

does it matter that some kids are getting around the ban? a report commissioned by the government (but never fully released) warned non-compliance "snowballing and becoming normalised" would "potentially undermine" its effectiveness.

Since Polygon is leaving it out of the headline: Epic Games partnered with The Game Awards to put money into the pocket of a bigot who uses her wealth to further the genocide of trans people through lawsuits and legislation. Every 'free' game gives money directly to JKR, and they are complicit.

Scoop: the pro-teen social media ban lobby group 36 Months was funded & co-staffed by its co-founder's ad production firm that was simultaneously making gambling ads

The federal government has ignored calls for a gambling ad ban while pursuing the social media ban.

Pulling on the threads of online censorship will make you lose your goddamn mind. Christian fundamentalists want to ban all adult content, and they're using payment processors to do it. It's a lousy conspiracy theory because they *proudly* boast about it in their press releases
There is no "safe" place for niche kinks or darker content until paypros change their policies. This is why the call/letter campaign is so important-- sites like Patreon, Itchio, Steam, etc, have to bend the knee because they companies are SO HUGE and control the entire money flow. It's a mess.
None of us are going to be able to create freely until those guys are brought to heel

The High Court challenge of the social media ban (to be heard in February) is arguing that the legislation infringes the implied right to political communication:
Banning under-16s from social media may be unconstitutional – and ripe for High Court challenge
This bill may well fall foul of the implied freedom of political communication by cutting children out of large parts of social media conversation.
