pretty big claim that they’ve been able to “mitigate the serious mental health issues”

I put in a request - haven’t heard anything

I assume eleventy jillion journalists have asked you this already @jay.bsky.team but does BlueSky have a statement on the Australian age enforcement of social media (legislation) and how are you going to go about doing it for an entire country?

Or do you drop Australian access?
cameronwilson.bsky.social
no I totally think they will! I just think you’re not going to see people of all ages mass exodus Instagram because they age check them
cameronwilson.bsky.social
You can’t upload, comment or message people, but otherwise you can do a lot!

I actually wrote about how you can still watch TikTok and YouTube Shorts almost a year ago! www.crikey.com.au/2024/11/26/t...

"Don't upload your ID unnecessarily anywhere on any platform," says government MP Josh Burns says on the ABC's teen social media ban special.

The law requires platforms to require at least one option for age checking other than ID, but IDs will likely be required for many.

There'll be some whack-a-mole but the network effect means that most people are clustered on the major platforms because all the connections and content is there.

unlike illegal online gambling websites which often just pop up once they've been banned, i don't think you can do that with TikTok
suecartwright.bsky.social
It will just end up with the Government playing Whack-a-mole. Whenever they ban a particular site, a new one will pop up that isn't covered by the age ban laws. Not even all existing social media platforms appear to have been considered in the current legislation.
cameronwilson.bsky.social
that's so kind, thank you so much!!!
cameronwilson.bsky.social
The government’s case for a flexibility in the teen social media ban is that tech changes quickly, so their policy response needs to change too

ie research into YouTube’s potential harms for young people used when considering the ban was based on research before YouTube shorts existed.

A “dynamic list” - at first arbitrary, then capricious as panic sets in?

With major tech companies are trying to get around the ban, the government is considering using a power that would let it designate which platforms are in the ban — and a "dynamic list" of platforms in the ban is expected to come this week.

I did a bad job of selling this, lemme try again:

YouTube claims its not in the ban based on the legislation. Snapchat also says it's outside of scope. TikTok is reportedly considering making an new app to get around the ban.

But the government might just declare them in the ban this week!

The Albanese Government is kicking off a national TV campaign to " prepare Australians for the Albanese Government’s world leading social media minimum age laws."

In addition, the eSafety Commissioner has flagged her office will be releasing more resources this week

for those keeping track at home: YouTube and Snapchat say they doesn't qualify, TikTok is reportedly trying to get around the ban by fiddling with its features.

With <2 months to go, 3 out of 5 companies /named/ by the government either don't accept they're in the ban or want to circumvent it

A pretty interesting line of question from Senator Sarah Henderson with the eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant who seems to suggest that TikTok floated getting around the ban by changing features of its app (or perhaps having an alternative) that would mean it would no longer qualify for the ban

Kick, the crypto casino-backed, Australian-owned streaming platform, has self-assessed as being in the ban, a eSafety Commissioner staff member said

eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant says she and Communications Minister Anika Wells met with Snapchat representatives today who told the government that they do not believe their platform qualifies as coming under the teen social media ban.

Jodie foster is sending me messages via Spotify playlist names

Extremely slim chance anyone following me uses the Bark app for monitoring their kids' online activity but it currently has a terrible bug with its Spotify monitoring.

In short, it assumes the song titles in playlists are direct messages from the monitored child to one of their friends.
