Always an exciting moment when we see les grues (the cranes) flying north over our part of France… a sign that spring is on the way.

Good read. From a German perspective, it's also ironic: since my first class on the history of international relations back in 2012, I've heard German academics, think-tankers, and politicians complain that there's no exact equivalent to “grand strategy” in German. Maybe that's a good thing.

Please. This is absurd. Europe can certainly deter Russia and defend itself if its focused and determined. Perpetuating a sense of European helplessness may help Rutte bureaucratically but its 1. wrong 2. prevents action. 3. willfully blind: the US ain't coming to defend Europe.
“If anyone thinks here… that the European Union or Europe as a whole can defend itself without the US, keep on dreaming,” Nato SecGen Mark Rutte told the European Parliament. “You can’t.”

“It will make things more complicated. I think Putin will love it. So think again.”

Electricity is back.
I thought we wouldn’t see it for a few days after the night attack.

Glory to Ukrainian engineers.

How about EU leaders today use emergency summit to develop a clear timetable for taking over critical enablers for the defense of Europe from the US and plan to develop capabilities? This has been over due for at least a year & is at very heart of vulnerability to US blackmail.

Young Europeans will make Europe more united!

For them, a European Army is more attractive than national armies or even NATO.

That is what today’s politicians need to have in mind!

Like, just yesterday I heard an AFD politician on the radio saying basically “I don’t understand why Germany should be involved with a Ukraine force, we should be looking to the *strong* Europeans, like the UK and France.”
Makes you wonder whether they know the actual numbers in Berlin.

It seems to have become a regular holiday feature in the Swedish newspaper SvD to publish long and dreamy articles about a Nordic union (they even got a name for it: Norden).

Among the nice things we could have they list Jens Stoltenberg as a federal chancellor

Macron is right: Europe should talk to Putin
This will no doubt inspire fury in some quarters, at the v thought of talking to Putin, but if Europe doesn't, then it is handing all the initiative to Trump. My take for the @thespectator1828.bsky.social blog

Macron is right: Europe should talk to Putin
There is a quietly emerging sentiment in Europe that simply shunning Putin as a bad man is simply not working.
