this unprecedented momentum behind a single issue sure might be a useful fulcrum to try and wrench this country back from over the brink
74% of Democrats support abolishing ICE, with 53% *strongly* supporting it, according to YouGov polling from last month.

Weak calls for "reform" are coming from *elected* Democrats like Chuck, not the average Democratic voter.
Democrats want commonsense reform for ICE:

End the roving patrols and racial profiling.

Take accountability and abide by the same rules as local police.

Masks need to come off, body cameras need to stay on—no secret police in the United States of America.

🚨BREAKING: President Donald Trump urged Republicans to seize control of elections and place voting under national authority Monday — one of his most explicit signals yet that he plans to interfere with the workings of democracy. www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...
Trump: ‘We should take over the voting’
Trump, as usual, offered no evidence for any of his claims.

With the latest Epstein drop, just think that Biden had all these incredibly damning files just sitting there for a whole 4 years and instead of doing *anything* with them he did a genocide.

There's no way you can keep funding a federal government who's primary mission is to inflict pain on the population. Every federal agency from McMahon at DoE to RFK shredding HHS and everything in between. Every day we let them stay open is more time we'll need to repair the damage they've done
Maher Tarabishi, who has been detained by ICE since October, was the primary caretaker of his disabled adult child, Wael.

On Jan. 23, Wael died from complications related to Pompe disease, a rare genetic condition.

ICE has now denied Maher’s request to attend his funeral, his attorney says.

it doesn't matter if you don't want to have this fight, it doesn't even matter if it's not politically optimal to have this fight

the fight is here and sitting it out is not an option

if you can't see that get out of the way

The best new characters so far are Lionel Baratheon's antlers closely followed by the editor splicing in cuts of Ser Arlan. Everybody else is great too but man, they're really the best.

We all bemoan the death of places we can go without spending money. Knowledge cartels already exist (see academic publishing) but this is an enclosure of the *process* of thinking. As such, it's actually a logical extension of Enlightenment thinking re the individual as enclosed body

There's another weird wrinkle here: if the federal government can sue states for legislating AI, then I imagine it becomes possible for the government (or another federal actor) to sue states for regulating other kinds of technologies.

This could possibly lead somewhere very bad.
1) There is no legal basis on which such an executive order against state-level "AI" regulation could possibly be enforced. No state or institution should comply w/ this in advance. Many will, obviously, because every EO this man puts out is a set of marching orders for his cronies; but none should.

Remember: they used thousands of academic books too! If you’re a scholar, check for your books too. This isn’t just novelists and pop writers, it’s academic books too!
AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.
Authors celebrate “historic” settlement coming soon in Anthropic class action
Advocates fear such settlements will “financially ruin” the AI industry.

I'm not trying to be mean, but racists who believe Trump betrayed them by being a child molester are not going to embrace the Democratic Party without forcing that party to embrace racism. And the people gained would in no way make up for those lost.

This to me was the leverage that got Schumer's henchmen to cave.

American Airlines PAC has them bought and paid for and they refuse to let a little thing like the ACA get in the way of the money made during the Holiday Season.

If you are a Democratic senator watching these results and the lesson you take is "I should cave and help Republicans reopen the government for nothing more than a promise written on toilet paper" then you shouldn't be in the Senate anymore
These big wins will embolden Dems to take on Trump's lawbreaking and show there's a price for GOP enabling of him. Folks hate to hear this, but normal patterns are asserting themselves: Liberalism isn't dead, Rs are likely to lose in 2026, and Trump is really unpopular, not a magical exception.

They always start with free speech. It sounds reasonable, doesn’t it? Free speech? And they can use it to shut down anyone who criticises them, because it’s all “free speech”

After “free speech” it’s “protecting women and girls”

And then it’s whatever they actually wanted.
The right-wing campaign group that helped topple Roe v Wade in the US is now working to roll back abortion laws in the UK, with the help of Nigel Farage.

Its first step? Trying to create a debate around "free speech"

This is the essence of it to me.

If the price of groceries is a kitchen table issue, then being too afraid of masked men -- who demand to see your identification while showing none of their own -- kidnapping you or your neighbors on the grocery store surely is a kitchen table issue too
