Work dumber not harder

My wife requested to come back upstairs in ten minutes but I forgot to set a timer so I'm doing math based on the time remaining on the clothes dryer (which I set just before talking to her) and the perceived length of the long-winded story I told before her request. We read with our kids every night before bed. We'd use our finger to follow along with the words. Then we had them read the early-reader books themselves. Just really simple words and sentences they could sound out and work through while we patiently sat with them.
