Public safety is the first duty of government. ICE is not just failing to protect public safety in Minnesota – it is an active threat to it. The president must end this operation immediately and allow for a thorough investigation by state and local law enforcement.

“…neither rhyme nor reason.”

We are currently in a situation where precedents and norms and laws and rules and theories offer no assistance.

By me.

We are watching one of the wildest things a nation-state has ever done: A superpower is committing suicide because the GOP Congress is too cowardly to stand up to the Mad King.

This is one of the wildest moments in all of geopolitics ever.

The central premise of Trumpism is that the suffering of other people--immigrants, trans people, "woke" liberals--would be your gain. There needs to be a direct and widespread effort to connect those issues to Trump's failure to deliver on that premise or else it'll remain as potent

So much of what conservatives describe as fear is really just discomfort. Which makes their violence in response to those feelings even more ridiculous.
One of the reasons I push back as hard as I do on "cities are scary" nonsense is that I do not accept the view that we should treat unfounded fears as legitimate, and we have too long indulged the unfounded, racist fears of conservatives. And that in turn is leading to a moment...

The pardon for Hernandez makes an obvious & absolute mockery of each & every attempt to rationalise, or even justify, Trump's treatment of Maduro. I'm not sure this single, simple point can be stressed enough. Once again, he proves his critics right & reduces his supporters to epic moral corruption.

yep. i can identify any number of structural issues but at the end of the day the basic problem is the republican party. this has been apparent for at least 20 years. it is also an incredibly unpopular observation to make among “serious” people.
Right.

If you want a good explanation of why the American system of government worked well enough for 200 years and then suddenly stopped, it's because Republicans in Congress suddenly started letting their partisan interests COMPLETELY override their institutional interests
a lot of problems wouldn't exist if we had a congress with even an ounce of self interest

With 60% of Americans living paycheck to paycheck, unemployment at a 4-year high, and a collapsing healthcare system, of course now is the time for us to "run Venezuela."

It's not hard, is it?
"I think we have to be consistent and say that even if we understand the US' reasoning and motivations, and believe the outcome of a Venezuela without Maduro is a positive one, an international system where powerful states remove foreign leaders they deem illegitimate will make us all less safe."

this is why I think publications that focus almost solely on culture war issues are so empty. The genuine economic, health, welfare etc impacts of policy are much more important than Ivy League coursework discourse but become sideshows to these people.

My ancestors got here in 1639. My Ohio-born great grandfather used to say our family sacrificed for this country so that the immigrant who arrives here tomorrow would have the same rights we do.

Casey and his post-Civil War family can kindly fuck off.

i really don't know the answer to this but what percentage of white americans like me have absolutely no idea where our ancestors were living more than a few generations back because most people in the family have not cared that much

It’s wild so many people are willing to go to bat for prisons as a reserve for rural jobs when universities are better in every aspect for such a role.
"Even after accounting for the upfront costs and delayed benefits, enrolling marginal applicants to public universities generates substantial net returns for society, the marginal students themselves, and the government budget."

Public Universities FTW!

It’s not “losing money” any more than air traffic controllers or public highways or street lights or fire departments are “losing money.” It is a government service. It’s not SUPPOSED to make money. It’s supposed to reliably deliver to anywhere in the US, even the unprofitable places.

The USPS faces a tight squeeze. With fewer people using the mail, it’s lost more and more money: $9 billion in the 12 months ending in September alone.

Trump found a cheat code in 2015: If you say you're a Christian, you don't have to act like a Christian as long as you keep the Christian base happy. Others on the right mirror that: Say you're a Christian and then support right-wing Christian positions and you can get away with a lot. 2/

Trump could win because he gave supporters plausible deniability (to themselves, if not to outsiders). He's putting on a show, messing with the media, trolling the left, that's just the way he talks, seriously but not literally, etc.

Vance's unabashed, creepy white nationalism doesn't have that.
