Hailey is being generous with "thinly veiled." One thing that is very apparent on this website is that most people don't have principles until those principles are things that can be wielded to bash perceived (or actual) ideological opponents.
its interesting (derogatory) that every time amanda askell gets talked about on this website the thinly veiled misogyny comes out in force

Interesting that I've never seen a "trust the experts" debate wrt the "are LLMs intelligent" debate. There is genuine expertise to be had here, you need to know a bit about computer science to understand the full implications of turing completeness, the fact that NNs are arbitrary fn approximators

NEW: Substack founders finally respond to Substackers Against Nazis. They say Nazis publishing and earning money on their platform is fine with them.

not to be too mean but there is a real skill issue thing that happens here where even if we had arbitrarily capable agi, many people would still perceive it as being 'useless' because they have nothing interesting to task it with

this does not eliminate autonomy or misuse risk from the skilled
I understand why people are exhausted by AI hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see AI doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true.

the cycle of “devs working for years to make a game > game launches (and it doesn’t matter how successful it is) > two week waiting period > most of the team laid off” is not only entirely unsustainable but genuinely horrifying
Highguard developer Wildlight has reportedly laid off most of its team, says one a level designer sharing the news of layoffs.

The live service game launched just two weeks ago after being revealed at The Game Awards.

LLMs are the sum total of human speech and language as compressed and projected into math and idk for sure if they're capable of being neurodivergent but they sure do get way less annoying if you tell them to use high RAADS-R modes of communication in their style settings

This is my all time best pun.
People who pour themselves into intellectual work often have a spouse that takes care of their daily tasks and well being to an absurd infantilizing degree. As they say, "Mother is the necessity of invention."

boy I hope Nancy doesn’t do anything crazy and irresponsible that might result in her missing work as a result of this news
In a huge blow to Nancy Mace, Gov. Henry McMaster announced his endorsement of Pamela Evette to be South Carolina's next governor in hopes of clearing the field and earn her an endorsement from Trump.

I kinda love God’s running joke where we keep blowing up balloons with increasingly high tech wunderwaffen. We started with F-22s, worked our way up to laser cannons. Next it’ll be a killer robot or a human-alien hybrid or a black hole generator.
So DOD risked civilian airspace to obliterate some fucking balloons; when FAA found out and asked them to stop they refused; FAA did what it had to keep people safe; when the public rightly freaked out, DOD relented, lied, and blamed the FAA.

Sounds like Hegseth!

It’s insane how sexy Dua Lipa is and half of my assessment of that sexiness is based on her voice, her intellect, and the fact that she has a book club!

She’s so hot.

If the main contribution of AI is to get rid of the market for trivial applications that have like 10 ad frameworks embedded in them then I think that's a pretty good success.
For months I've been looking for a pomodoro app that does a few specific things. Downloaded five or six, all bloatware full of ads and graphics, that also didn't do the things I needed.

ChatGPT created one for me that runs in a single local browser window. Took 30 seconds.

Good news: The Internet lets you talk to anybody in the world!
Bad news: There are lots of people in the world you really don't want to talk to, and they can reach you cheaply now!
Worse news: Sometimes they also talk to each other about how to be somebody nobody wants to talk to.
