It’s easy to forget that most people only know “I Can Tolerate Anything Except the Outgroup” and “The Categories Were Made For Man, Not Man For the Categories”. And “Meditations on Moloch” of course.

Ideally people should have integrity in their beliefs. Ideology shouldn't be contingent on whether particular people are nice to you. But from a results oriented perspective we should recognize the fact that people are human, and not alienate them unnecessarily. This kind of blame isn't constructive
if you can flip your beliefs because nobody kissed your ass enough, you didn’t really believe in what you said you did in the first place.

Getting follows from a bunch of people just because I'm on a couple lists seems like a double edged sword. Like at some point half of you will be like "wait, who's this? I didn't make a conscious decision to follow this guy! I don't have a default assumption he has good intentions!"

BYO algorithm and personalized blocklists will be maddeningly unsatisfying for most people
this is a good norm to set. i don't think it will convince many - blocking only determines what one experiences individually, but people don't care about that as much as they care about limiting the influence of bad ideas and bad behavior on everyone else.

Cold take that bears repeating: Many who consider themselves good crave cruelty. So they seek out people who they feel morally justified in being cruel to. If they can't find enough to satisfy themselves, they will perform mental gymnastics to expand the category of morally acceptable targets.

No one is owed attention. You must earn it. That’s what persuasion is. If people cared about changing people’s minds, they’d go into others’ communities and do the work.
