Rick Steves from 2014: "The more I travel, the clearer it seems to me: Fear is for people who don't get out much. These people don't see the world firsthand, so their opinions end up being shaped by sensationalistic media coverage geared toward selling ads."
Op-Ed: Tune out cable news and turn away fear

The creative discrepancy between THE PHANTOM MENACE and “Duel of the Fates” is almost startling. Hard to think of another piece of music that good used in a movie that bad (the DRAGONHEART theme is also a contender)

After having owned a really good pair of headphones for the first time in my life (Sennheiser Accentum Plus Wireless), I feel comfortable stating that you have not actually heard real music on earbuds, stereo speakers, car set-ups, etc.—none match headphones for the sound’s sheer depths and layers

It is a rare thing to really love movies these days—not as products, or meme factories, or greasy nuggets of pop culture that pass through our collective memory faster than shit through a gander, but as the real true powerful thing—and @bwdr.bsky.social really loves movies. Worth your support.

Rudy Bridges is younger than the Sitting President of the United States and 29 sitting United States Senators
It’s useful for people of my generation to be reminded that this wasn’t that long ago. Ruby Bridges isn’t just still alive—she’s only 71, not ancient!
65 years ago on Nov. 14, little Ruby Bridges was escorted into an all-white elementary school in New Orleans. Norman Rockwell, renowned for blissful depictions of Americana, did this remarkable painting for Look magazine. Printed as a double page, over-size spread, it's his masterpiece.

The look of existential malaise on Jesse Eisenberg’s face in all these junket interviews for the new NOW YOU SEE ME movie is haunting; literally 8 months ago he was up for an Oscar for writing an emotionally incisive family drama and now he’s at a table with Dave Franco talking about card tricks

HBO Max has pretty quickly become my second streaming source after Criterion. They’re like a small branch library: If you’re looking for something specific pre-1960 they probably don’t have it, but if you’re looking more generally for something good pre-1960 you’ll be fine.
HBO Max added 30 classic crime films in Nov — from proto-noirs like THE PUBLIC ENEMY (1931) to essentials like OUT OF THE PAST (1947).

Including their Criterion titles, they now have nearly 100 pre-1960 noirs.

There’s even a dedicated #Noirvember section. (New adds in alt text.) #FilmSky #FilmNoir
