New on @bostonhassle.bsky.social: I had a grand old time with DEATHSTALKER, the amiably goofy VHS throwback from director/SFX whiz Steven Kostanski. If you see one reboot of a vaguely remembered ‘80s franchise this week, make it this one! bostonhassle.com/review-death...

Yeah, that’s probably my “real” answer too— it achieves a headspace few other horror movies have ever achieved. If you haven’t seen it, check out Hooper’s follow-up EATEN ALIVE. It’s not as good, but maybe even more nightmarish.

I wrote a piece some years ago to parse my feelings toward this movie (plus bonus Don Knotts content!). It succeeds, unequivocally, for precisely the reasons it should not exist. bostonhassle.com/cannibal-hol...

Will people get mad at me if I say CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST?

What’s the scariest horror movie you’ve ever seen?

I’ve gotten a few solicitations to review AI-made films, and like… that’s not criticism, that’s an ink blot test.
bwdr.bsky.social
One thing AI is good for is reminding people how even the very worst movie they’ve ever seen is better than AI “movies”

One element of TRON: ARES which is underdiscussed but I think notable is how much shittier the deepfake Jeff Bridges looks in the opening montage than the de-aged Jeff Bridges from LEGACY 15 years ago.

First time seeing a movie at Jordan’s Furniture and I have The Fear 😧
Enormous IMAX screen with the Jordan’s Furniture logo bouncing around like a screensaver

If I wake up in a horror movie, I’ve already survived Freddy Krueger.

In the spirit of spooky season, I got an
interactive thread for yall 🤭

You wake up trapped in a horror movie. Which villain are you confident you could survive?

• Pennywise
• Michael Myers
• Candyman
• Jason
• Freddy Krueger

Prior to 2010 it was practically impossible to watch HAUSU outside of an unsubtitled VHS dub!

I remember the 1996 edition of Videohound’s cult movie guide gave it a tepid 2 bones, but the revised edition in 2002 bumped it up to a full 4.

It was definitely considered inessential when I went through TP in high school— I didn’t get around to it until the DVD came out (a couple years after I finished the series) and was blown away!

Probably tough to overstate Criterion’s role here too— foreign films are much more easily accessible than they once were, and they’ve played a huge part in that.
theoscargoff.bsky.social
In general I think there’s been a major shift in the past 20ish years where people went from learning about films in books and review sites to Letterboxd/social media and podcasts, which has reshapes the canon in pretty dramatic ways.
theoscargoff.bsky.social
I’ve said this before, but Michael Mann feels MUCH more enshrined in the film-geek pantheon than when I was coming up in the early ‘00s.

Kind of incredible that political discourse in America has organically evolved into “good frogs vs. bad frogs.”

I'm finally starting this project to watch the entire Touchstone Pictures filmography (every film associated with the Disney label whether through production or distribution) from 1984-2016 & share my thoughts on each release in this thread. Follow along as I revisit the hits, misses & obscurities.

I am incapable of hearing the title “HAMNET” and not picturing a pig-themed Dragnet parody.

I didn’t win the Nobel Peace Prize this year either, if anyone’s wondering.

One thing I’ll never quite understand is why music videos didn’t regain cultural prominence in the 2010s, when YouTube became a primary avenue for listening to music.

I really wish there was a way to make CEOs hear every normal person’s moan of disappointment when they realize the cute/funny video they’re watching is AI.

'The consumer doesn't care if what they're looking at is AI' YES THEY DO WE KEEP HEARING THAT THEY DO maybe there's a percentage that don't BUT MANY PEOPLE REALLY FUCKING DO CARE

Say what you will about Pitchfork, but they definitely would have found a way to put some late period Scott Walker on that 21st century songs list.

I heard an interview with Bruce McCulloch where he said, “If anyone has ever been under the impression we were cool, it’s because of Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet.”
