Haha. Aw c'mon now. I liked some of those Vertigo releases. I liked that there WERE Vertigo releases, even if I DIDN'T like them. It was probably the last time I was moved to shop in a mainstream LCS, and that was 30 fucking years ago.

Still unclear whether Bluesky will help me sell books. We'll see next Fall when the new one comes out. Still have FB and Insta pages, although I don't post much, and I fucking HATE Meta.

The main reason was it just became totally useless as a work tool, which was the only reason I was there. Musk destroyed the algorithm. No one was seeing my posts except bots. My followers doubled in 6 months (all bots) but engagement dropped off the cliff. And, of course, my feed was all nazis.

Occasionally I miss old Twitter, but then I remember why I split.

"(Twitter) simply became unusable. It stopped generating the things (good jokes, interesting debate, clicks) I wanted; it became extremely good at generating the things (racists, pornbots, racist pornbots) I did not."

Some of these creeps, like Louie and Chapelle, are no surprise. But Whitney Cummings and Hannibal Buress? Bill Burr is a big disappointment, too.

Maron said it best: "The same guy that's gonna pay them is the same guy that paid to bone-saw Jamal Khashoggi and put him in a fucking suitcase."

My grandmother took photos of JFK's televised funeral. An entire roll. Don't think I saved them though.

Haha. I still have a couple dozen 8-track punk rock tapes! And my trusty space helmet 8-track player!

Such a rotten format. My first car had an 8-track player. I begged the Old Man for a cassette deck, but he refused. Every time you took a hard turn you'd be pelted w/ flying tapes.

You can pick up copies of Stalker for next to nothing if you're interested.

A related series were the S&S stories Wally Wood did in Marvel's Tower of Shadows in 1970. They're fluff, but nicely done. A couple of these predate Conan #1! Wood could still draw beautifully then. By 1975 and Stalker he was a shadow of what he was. So tragic.

Wish Wally had done more S&S.

DC didn't get the hang of Sword & Sorcery until Mike Grell gave them WARLORD later in 1975. Carmine Infantino got the boot by the time WARLORD really got rolling.

Weird that DC couldn't master the genre. It's a pretty simple formula! Hero, sword, wizard, monster, boobs.
Gorgeous spread by Mike Grell. Warlord battles on horseback.

It's not on par with Barry Smith's CONAN or the Severin Siblings KULL. Ditko was past his peak. Booze had robbed poor Wally of much of his incredible skill. But it was a pleasant read, and 1975 DC didn't have many of those.

Naturally, Carmine axed it after 4 issues, like he did 90% of new titles.
STalker battles a demon. Pretty page.

It so happened Ditko was looking for work. So Joe assigned him the book. Wally Wood wanted a job, too. He no longer wanted to pencil, only ink. Perfect. A dream team!

Imagine being 19 years old and you find out Ditko and Wood are your art team! Hey, no pressure, kid.

The story is, Levitz was Joe Orlando's gofer at DC. Publisher Carmine Infantino came into Joe's office & ordered him to produce 2 new sword & sorcery titles ASAP. Orlando didn't know from S&S. "I'll do it," piped up young Levitz. He got the gig!

A fun, forgotten Bronze Age gem is STALKER. It had a brief 4-issue run in 1975.

It was created & written by 19-year-old Paul Levitz, straight out of high school. The art job was given to Steve Ditko, his 1st work for DC since the Creeper in 1968! Even better, Wally Wood inked him. 3 Hall of Famers!

With the holidays upon us, don't give to Salvation Army. Not even change. It's a scumbag "charity" run by anti-gay zealots.

Habitat for Humanity is great. Your local Food Bank is great.

So many "charities" are for-profit scams. Use Charity Navigator to vet them. www.charitynavigator.org

Fun fact about the Salvation Army: they use a form of substance use treatment called work therapy. Oh, and by treatment, I mean they have people who have been convicted of drug charges work for their stores & warehouses in exchange for room, board, around a $1 a week, and minimal actual therapy.

Man. I haven't watched an episode of SNL in at least 20 years. No desire to.

It was like National Lampoon mag was on tv. Not as edgy or scathing, of course. I loved the Lamp. No surprise since most of the writers, and half the cast were stolen from Lampoon.
