i’m funny, but in like a dark comedy kind of way. you’re uncomfortable and want to turn it off but like a bad accident you just can’t look away.

“Are the scenes doing double duty?”
Scenes need to advance story AND be funny. They can’t just do one or the other. A good story on The Office was one that had a compelling story AND the comedy was baked-into it. If a scene lacked a comedic game, the comedy was much harder to write.

It's not the easiest to make a remake of, as it's kind of a special movie that walks a fine line of a very particular kind of horror comedy.
That version may be worth checking out, yes. That said, I do prefer the original. Certain added things felt more typical than what made the original so good.
