Trevor Philips in the Times, calling for a Trump/Miller-style of random deportations based on skin colour.

It’s hard to read this stuff from doctors without cringing at how wildly out of touch it sounds (and how little self-awareness). £100k+ income is, to most of the public, beyond our dreams. Entitlement and class privilege is not the best way to win people over to your cause!

July 2024 - Labour are elected on the basis of Starmer being a dull but competent PM.

No drama just focused on fixing the basics.

November 2025 - Now the least popular PM ever Starmer announces plans for mass deportations, the seizure of immigrant wealth and the indentured labour of migrants.

The real issue isn’t immigration, it’s the feedback loop: platforms amplify anxiety → voters feel it → politicians chase it → hollow policy follows. Until we break that cycle, we won’t get functional decisions or functional democracy.

Something I’ve noticed is there seems to be a sort of pervasive assumption that the status quo has gravity. That there’s a natural, comfortable way things should be and that deviations from the normal state of the world will correct themselves in time.

But as a paleontologist, I know this is false.

The centrist parties in the UK and US need to wrestle with the fact that they are used by business and right-wing interests to "squat" the vote against progressive policies. The "oh renewables are putting your costs up" stuff is a perfect example of that at a time when renewables are getting cheap.

Honestly TELL THE STORY. Won’t someone just tell the fucking story of how Brexit created this economic hardship, how a Muslim immigrant just saved the lives of those commuters on that train, won’t someone in politics or even media just connect the fucking dots and TELL THE STORY. IT’S RIGHT THERE

Dems just won everything remotely winnable. But I expect the British derp on “we must understand Donald Trump’s popularity and/or imitate Trump” to continue. He’s popular when opposing. He’s deeply unpopular when required to run anything. There’s your lesson.
This is insane. Is there *any* race that was expected to be at all close that the GOP won?
What we know, final edition of the night:
[Now in 3 parts]

—Prop 50 wins
—VA Dems flip Gov, LG, AG
—Dems gain leg seats in VA, NJ, & MS
—Dems defend NJ-Gov
—Dems win NJ+VA trifectas
—Mamdani wins
—PA Dems win state supreme court
—ME anti-mail voting measure loses
—GA Dems flip 2 statewide offices

Fascinating, yet chilling story about nation states threats over published research. However, what is most interesting is the excellent use of the horrendous freedom of speech legislation, drafted as part of the Tories culture war against universities, actually being used for good. Well done.
A really sobering story about how vulnerable UK universities are to intimidation to get them to abandon human rights research. Claims by China in this report of inadequate "fact checking" should always be accompanied by mention of their exclusions from Xinjiang:

+++ Now on anti-depressants, wish I'd started them years ago. The difference in my general mood is astonishing.

--- Just upped my dosage and a (hopefully temporary) side-effect is ramping up my ADHD to previously unseen levels. I feel like I'm the guest star in a Very Special Episode of a sitcom.

It’s been a while since I posted new records, largely because it’s been a while since I bought any. Finally got round to visiting the vinyl shop in Falkirk, and found a couple of gems. Picking up Arab Strap there felt appropriate, and am now 3 for 3 on Sisters albums.
